Three black women -- all ranked within the Top 4 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association -- are among the faves to win the NCAA singles tourney this week! No black woman has ever won the NCAA singles title. In 1998 there were no black women in the top 100 of college tennis. Now there are 5 in the top 32 and 7 in the top 100! The best black male players in pro tennis have come from the NCAA scene. Arthur Ashe is the only black man to win an NCAA singles title, in 1965. James Blake was NCAA singles runner-up in 1999. No guys are among the favorites this year.
