1 million blacks (yes, a mil) served in World War II. Veterans remember their bitterness about blatantly biased homecomings, but also the black newspapers' "Double V" campaign (victory abroad against Nazism, victory at home against racism). Events this weekend in D.C. unveiling the WW II Memorial will celebrate their role in the war. Once black folks went abroad to fight for other folks' freedom, upon return folks really began "agitating" for our own freedom in the civil rights movement.
