The Mayflower Compact

30 black cultural conservatives have authored and signed the 21st Century Mayflower Compact. Today the Compact - which seeks a new vision to strengthen black families and communities in USA - was signed during a ceremony at the Mayflower Hotel in D.C. Signers included Frederick Douglass IV (pictured), Herman Cain, Bishop Keith Butler, Peter Kirsanow, and Roy and Niger Innis. According to the signers, "The Compact identifies and names the Citizens' Responsibilities Movement that is already taking place across the country and calls for a culture of personal responsibility and a renewed commitment to family, faith, education and economic growth -- within the Black community, and for all Americans." The Compact is here. For more info or to sign onto the Compact, visit The Mayflower Compact Coalition's website.

I agree with much of the vision, but hate the name. The Pilgrims and the Mayflower ship ain't rooted in black history. Why are non-blacks invited to sign onto a compact that promotes black personal responsibility? I don't recognize most of the signers. Colin Powell, Secretary Condoleezza Rice, Michael Steele, Rep. Sanford Bishop Jr. (a moderate-conservative Democrat), etc. would help.
