As you may know, the Senate narrowly passed the Central America Free Trade Agreement last month. The legislation faces an even stiffer test in the U.S. House, where even Republicans have been slow to support President Bush on the bill. However, Rep. William Jefferson is one of the most outspoken advocates for the measure in the U.S. House of Representatives. The moderate Louisiana Democrat and Congressional Black Caucus member argues that is in America's interests and helps keep the country competitive. The sugar industry is fighting the measure tooth and nail. CAFTA would create a free trade zone with the United States and five Central American countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua - plus the Dominican Republic.
