Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated today in a suicide bombing, apparently accompanied by gunshots, as she was leaving a political rally. Mrs. Bhutto, 54, had just finished addressing a rally of her Pakistani Peoples Party in Rawalpindi, the garrison city just 10 miles south of the capital city of Islamabad. Her assassination throws the campaign for January 8 parliamentary elections into chaos.
Some witnesses said a man on a motorcycle fired on Mrs. Bhutto and her entourage before blowing himself up. At least 20 supporters were killed in the attack.
In November, Mrs. Bhutto survived the first attempt on her life as she returned from eight years in self-imposed exile. That attack, in her home city of Karachi, killed at least 140 supporters.
