Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Sen. John Edwards are both expected today to quit their respective presidential bids. Mr. Giuliani, once the Republican front-runner due to his status as "America's Mayor," suffered a debilitating defeat in yesterday's Florida primary by placing a distant third. He is prepared today to endorse his friendliest rival, Sen. John McCain.
Mr. Edwards notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make his announcement today in New Orleans. The decision came after Mr. Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to Democratic rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama. Mr. Edwards will not immediately endorse either candidate in what is now a two-person race for the Democratic nomination, said one adviser.
My response: Mr. Giuliani was on my short list, as I decided to vote in the Republican primary this year. Instead, I voted for Sen. McCain. I'm glad that I did so, because I'd be upset right now about Mr. Giuliani dropping out of the race and basically a wasted vote by me. Mr. Edwards should have dropped out after South Carolina. Whoever advised Mr. Giuliani that he should put all of his eggs in Florida's basket - and thus his name not being out there in the news, when he could've made a competitive run in places like New Hampshire, Michigan, and Nevada - should get publicized and ridiculed. Why are Mike Huckabee, Ron Paul, and Alan Keyes still in the Republican race? Why is Mike Gravel still in the Democratic race?
