Quote Of The Day

"I never felt that I was in a dangerous position. I never felt being in a sense of peril, or 'Oh, God, I hope I'm going to be OK when I get out of this helicopter or when I get out of this tank....What kind of president would say, 'Hey, man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife...oh, and take a guitar player [Sheryl Crow] and a comedian with you.'" — comedian Sinbad, a supporter of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential bid, in his recollection of the 1996 trip to Bosnia. Sen. Hillary Clinton, then First Lady, went on the trip with her daughter Chelsea and claimed that she was under sniper fire during the trip. After video footage showed the opposite, Sen. Clinton has since claimed that she "misspoke" about her recollection, which has drawn controversy

Great quote.

FYI: Mrs. Clinton also mispoke during her 3/25/08 press conference when she claimed: “I was the first first lady taken into a war zone since Eleanor Roosevelt during World War II.”

Pat Nixon has that distinction, and Barbara Bush was the second.

Moreover, in July 1969, following the 1968 Tet Offensive, South Vietnam was a real war zone. Whereas in March 1998 when Clinton visited Bosnia, it was a potential war zone.

Words matter. Truthful words matter.

To paraphrase Mrs. Clinton: lifting passages from someone else's book isn't change you can believe in, it's change you can xerox.

Oh, and isn't it curious, that this passage appears in Julie Nixon Eisenhower's biography of her mother:

"The [July 1969 South Vietnam] visit marked the first time that a First Lady had been in a combat zone, although another First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, had also visited troops on her numerous travels to England and throughout the South Pacific, Australia, and New Zealand during World War II."
