Barack Obama formally rejected Gen. Wesley Clark's recent comments yesterday that questioned whether Sen. John McCain's military experience qualified him to be commander in chief. Politik Ditto, a black conservative Democratic blogger who supports Sen. McCain for president, writes: "Barack Obama may be the most liberal senator in the entire Congress, but that doesn't make him a dummy. When you have no military experience yourself, while knowing little about foreign policy and a surrogate goes off the deep end dissing an opponent that happened to be a POW, the last thing you want to do is be associated with that kind of in-your-face stupidity. Apparently, Obama wants the voters to dig and find out for themselves just what a partisan, left-wing loon of a politician he really is. Good thinking Barack! What they don't know won't hurt ya."
My response: Gen. Clark's question wasn't per se unreasonable. One can argue that Sen. McCain's experience as a prisoner of war alone doesn't provide the necessary experience to oversee the country's national security policies. Fair point, and Gen. Clark has the credentials to make such a point. However, it is unreasonable when Gen. Clark is backing a guy who has zero military experience to be Commander-In-Chief, and who has only been in the U.S. Senate for three years. Meanwhile, Sen. McCain is former Navy, a POW, and is the ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Committee. Sen. Obama was wise to distance himself, although I believe that it was a strategy to get the meme out there.
