The U.S. Census Bureau released its annual statistics on income, poverty, and health insurance. Here are Black America's figures:
median household income: $33,916 (national median: $50,233). This represents the first measured real increase in annual household income for Black America since 1999
per capita income: $18,428 (national figure: $26,804). There was a very slight rise, but it was statistically insignificant
poverty level: 24.5% (national rate: 12.5%). The black poverty rate remained statistically unchanged
health insurance rate: 80.5% (national rate: 84.7%). 19.5% of black Americans are uninsured, compared to the 15.3% national rate. The number of uninsured blacks remained statistically unchanged from 2006, at 7.4 million. However, the percentage of uninsured blacks declined from 20.5% in 2006
Imagine where we would be if (1) our single-parent household figure wasn't so high, as single-parent households are significantly poorer than two-parent households; and (2) if we raised our high school graduation rate.
