The Committee to Protect Journalists has announced the five winners of its 2008 International Press Freedom Awards, one of whom is Andrew Mwenda of Uganda.
The CPJ award goes to journalists who have "risked imprisonment, harassment, and, above all, their lives to report the news and stand up for press freedom in their countries." Longtime Booker Rising readers are familiar with Mr. Mwenda's libertarianism, the Ugandan government's crackdown on his radio show and now his newspaper, The Independent, and his jail time for his views.
The awards will be presented in New York City on November 25.
