Quote Of The Day

"That'd be his likely AG pick, Eric Holder [as the first Cabinet pick of President-Elect Barack Obama that I don't like]. He's, in my judgement, already corrupt on power. He has a record of supporting IMHO unreasonable crackdowns for questonable reasons. One is his like of the escalating drug penalties beyond reason, despite the fact that all it's done is raise enforcement/jail costs and bring back '30s-style gangs here and Latin America; the cost of drugs hasn't budged, nor have reported drugs rates gone down. The other is his idea that we should censor the Internet, a clear free speech violation, and all as reaction to ONE incident, Columbine. To be a little fair, there's NEVER been an AG I can think of having trusted (mebbe I shoulda trusted Ashcroft better..). Is there something powermad about the post?" — John Kay, moderate-liberal Democratic blogger at Centerfield

Ashcroft was certainly over-criticized, and it started before he'd even begun. He turned out to be one of the most resistant to some of the more hardline tactics of the Cheney wing of the administration. He's no Colin Powell. Powell was against things Bush was on board with. But he certainly did what he could to prevent the Cheney wing from pushing through underhanded stuff without informing Bush.

I'm curious why Mukasey is so problematic. Is there any evidence at all that he's powermad? He seems to be a fine remedy to the problems of his predecessor.
