Harvard University Press informs me that a new biography about Booker T. Washington will be out in January: Up From History: The Life Of Booker T. Washington by Robert J. Norrell. Up From History is the first major biography of the conservative Republican educator and free enterprise advocate since Louis Harlan's two-volume analysis in 1972. HUP argues that while Mr. Harlan's books reflected a negative scholarly view of Mr. Washington, Up From History seeks to put Mr. Washington in context of his own time and not by standards decades after his death.
