PHOTO OF THE DAY: Iman

A month ago, I said that if I could be any woman who is older than I am, it would be Angela Bassett. Let me revise: I'd want to look like Iman, but be Angela Bassett.

Iman Mohamed Adbulmajid was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and is the daughter of a former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia and a gynecologist. A Muslim, her first name means "faith" in Arabic. Iman partly grew up in Egypt and Kenya. In 1975, the 5'9" beauty was recruited as a model by Peter Beard, and American photographer, and relocated to the United States. The long-necked model's first modeling assignment was for Vogue in 1976. Of course, we also remember her in Michael Jackson's "Remember The Time" (1992) video.

However, Iman is not just a pretty face: She studied political science at the University of Nairobi (Kenya) and is a graduate of New York University. She is also fluent in five languages: Somali, Arabic, English, French, and Italian. In 2001 Iman published her autobiography, I Am Iman. She heads her own cosmetics line, "IMAN Cosmetics, Skincare & Fragrances", geared toward women of color. Iman also hosts "Project Runway Canada" on the Slice network.

Some tidbits about Iman: Iman has been married three time. Her first husband was her teenage sweetheart. Her first husband was professional basketball player Spencer Haywood - they were married from 1978 to 1987 - and they have one daughter. She has a bowie knife tattoed on her right ankle, after ther third and current husband gave her a 10.5 canary diamond to celebrate their union. After several years of trying to conceive a child, Iman decided to rely on an African custom to stimulate fertility: hold another woman's baby. Iman borrowed fellow model Christie Brinkley's baby and several months later, she was pregnant. And for the political junkies, let me toss this one to you: judging by the Obama/Biden icon on her business website, I think I can conclude that she wanted Barack Obama to win the U.S. presidency.

Still a fashion plate at age 53, Iman remains a stunner. I believe that out of all of the supermodels, Iman was the prettiest one. She was also the most elegant one. Compare Janice Dickinson to her and it's no contest....whether back in the 1970s and certainly not now. No wonder our girl made it onto Black Entertainment Television's "Black Don't Crack: Fabulous Celebs Over 50" list.

Iman has been married to billionaire entertainer David Bowie since 1992. They have one daughter, and Iman also has a stepson.
