Devone Tucker agrees with former Florida Governor Jeb Bush's argument that the Republican Party must move beyond the late President Ronald Reagan. The black conservative Republican blogger opines: "Some Reagan addicts can recognize that it’s no longer the 1980s, but their reactions to events in the present day border on the paranoid ('Where’s Obama’s birth certificate? Isn’t he a Muslim?') These addicts don’t fully grasp how much the country has changed since the 1980s; they don’t fully understand that a certain political party no longer has a drop of credibility when it claims to stand for limited government. They don’t fully understand that there are many Americans struggling with health care and education costs—and while they don’t want handouts from statist liberals, they don’t want to be told, either directly or subtly, that they’re on their own by conservatives. One hopes that these addicts will finally find the strength to get off Reagan. These Americans should be drug-free; by overcoming their addiction, they will be able to see today’s problems clearly, and address those problems with fresh thinking—not with drug-addled nostalgia. Once free from addiction, these Americans will be able to look at any politician promising a false return to the past and, appropriately, just say no."
Booker Rising response: The Democrats are still touting the President Franklin D. Roosevelt Era and its "New Deal" policies. The GOP touting President Ronald Reagan is almost post-modern by comparison. Both political parties need to move forward.
