France's minister for human rights will urge Myanmar to immediately free opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi at high-level meetings next Thursday in South East Asia. Rama Yade (pictured) will represent France at the ASEM (Asia-Europe) ministerial meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam and the European Union-ASEAN meeting with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Saturday in Phnom Pen, Cambodia. The moderate-conservative diplomat has been pressing the Burmese government for some time to release the 63-year-old pro-democracy activist.
The leader of the National League for Democracy, Ms. Suu Kyi has been imprisoned for 13 of the past 19 years by Myanmar's military junta. She was re-arrested this month for allegedly breaching the terms of her house arrest following a bizarre incident when an American swam across a lake to her house and stayed two days. Ms. Suu Kyi's defenders insist the intruder wasn't invited to her home.
