VIDEO: Wanda Sykes Comedy Routine

She was the headliner at last night's White House Correspondents' Association dinner. I thought her performance was hit and miss. She was too partisan and sycophantic of President Obama, although some of her jokes were funny. Ms. Sykes went much easier on President Obama and the current administration (which is supposed to be the dinner's focus), than he went on himself and his team. Never mind that there's a wealth of material to draw from regarding B-Rock, when comedians come off the hero worship: President Obama's obsessive teleprompter use, PDA propensity, his metrosexual moments, lack of dancing skills, differences in being a black president, his ego, various gaffes, etc. She did nail President Obama on thinking that his basketball skills were so good that he brags to his wife about it, but that folks are actually going easy on him because he is president. President Obama even pointed to Mrs. Obama on that one:



President Obama's body language shows that he wasn't feeling Ms. Sykes' Joe Biden torture joke (which I thought was funny). We also find out during this video that it was President Obama's idea to give Queen Elizabeth an iPod, as Mrs. Obama told on him!

I thought the joke about Alaska Governor Sarah Palin being an event no-show & abstinence was funny, although it was controversial. There were some groans in the audience, and I'm sure Ms. Sykes will get slammed for that one. I even thought the joke about Rush Limbaugh being the 20th 9/11 hijacker but missing his flight due to being strung out on Oxycontin (another controversial line) was funny. However, Ms. Sykes went over the line when she said that she hopes his kidneys fail. Conservatives are not pleased, and are accusing her of dividing America. Even a liberal Democrat takes issue with Wanda Sykes' performance. MSNBC pundits last night were saying they thought she went over the line with some of her jokes.

Overall, I actually liked President Obama’s comedy routine better.
