Interracial Couple Denied Marriage License In Louisiana: Bookerista Perspectives

La Shawn Barber: "Justice Of The Peace Refuses Marriage License For Interracial Couple"

The conservative blogger in California opines
: "I can’t believe what I read. A Louisiana justice of the peace, in 2009, refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple. I suspect he’s a smoker of crack. Keith Bardwell said, 'I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house. My main concern is for the children…I don’t do interracial marriages because I don’t want to put children in a situation they didn’t bring on themselves. In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer.' Then he said, 'I try to treat everyone equally.' (Source) First of all, how has he gotten away with refusing to issue marriage licenses to interracial couples? Second, unless he knows of specific instances of children being abused or neglected, it’s not his business. Third, he may as well get out of the marriage business if he’s concerned about break-ups. The divorce rate in the U.S. is almost 50 percent. There must be more to the story. Nonetheless, even if he was set up, he ensnared himself. For liberals poised to use this silly incident to bolster arguments for homosexual 'marriage,' see Loving the Interracial Marriage Distinction."

Avery Tooley: "Still Surprised"

The moderate-conservative blogger writes: "I don’t know if I’m jaded or if the lens through which I view the world is particularly different, but some things are just surprising to me. Take, for instance, the fact that an interracial couple was denied a marriage license by the Justice of the Peace. While that on it[s] face surprises me a little, I think what really surprises me is that there are people who are stupefied by it. Seriously. People are surprised by an expression of racism? If it’s that surprising, then I would imagine it means they need to get out a little more. Is that type of egregious behavior less-prevalent than it was in times past? Absolutely. Does less-prevalent mean altogether gone? Under no circumstances. A lot of me thinks that type of surprise has more to do with political brand identification than it has anything to do with an individual person’s life experiences."

I would guess that people in their 30's and younger will have one reaction and people in their 50's and older will have another.

If, this country can survive another 30 years, us older folks will be gone. Hopefully most of us have done our job right and raised our children as good people.

Older people still remember when this was "normal" behavior. My "shock" is that the people of this parrish had done nothing to remove this couple from the job many, many years ago.

But then I think...now isn't that the pot calling the kettle black. But I can proudly say, the city officials where I live hate my guts and will celebrate my death...in fact they go out of their way to speed it along. And I will continue to be a thorn in their side for as long as I can.

I just hope the "Good Ole Boy" system dies before me. I'd love to see it.

If that's his argument so be it but what made him so sure they would have children?
