D.C. Sniper Execution Will Proceed Tonight

At 9pm EST, by lethal injection, at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Va. Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine denied clemency today for sniper John Allen Muhammad, clearing the way for him to be executed for the attacks that terrorized the U.S. capital region for three weeks in 2002. Muhammad's attorneys had asked Gov. Kaine to commute his sentence to life in prison, claiming that he is mentally ill. The U.S. Supreme Court turned down his final appeal.

Muhammad was sentenced to death for killing Dean Harold Meyers at a Manassas, Va. gas station during a three-week spree that left 10 dead across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. He and his teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, also were suspected of fatal shootings in other states, including Louisiana, Alabama and Arizona.

Muhammad, 48, was offered a choice for his last meal, which he accepted and requested that details not be released to the public. The former U.S.Army soldier has also met with his relatives.

UPDATE: Muhammad died at 9:11pm EST. He had no final statement and didn't say anything during the execution process.

Prof Busted In Columbia Gal 'Punch'

Does this count as a "hate crime"? A prominent Columbia University architecture professor punched a female university employee in the face at a Harlem bar during a heated argument about race relations (hat tip: NewsOne). Police busted Lionel McIntyre, 59, for assault yesterday after his bruised victim, Camille Davis, filed charges. McIntyre and Ms. Davis, who works as a production manager in the school's theater department, are both regulars at Toast, a popular university bar. The professor had been engaged in a fiery discussion about "white privilege" with Ms. Davis, who is white, and another male regular, who is also white, on Friday night at 10:30 when fists started flying, patrons said.

McIntyre, who is known as "Mac" at the bar, shoved Ms. Davis, and when the other patron and a bar employee tried to break it up, the prof slugged Ms. Davis in the face, witnesses said. "The punch was so loud, the kitchen workers in the back heard it over all the noise," said bar back Richie Velez, 28, said. "I was on my way over when he punched Camille and she fell on top of me." The other patron involved in the dispute said McIntyre then took a swing at him after he yelled, "You don't hit a woman!" "He knocked the glasses right off my face," said the man, who would only give his first name as "Shannon." "The punch came out of nowhere. Mac was talking to us about white privilege and what I was doing about it -- apparently I wasn't doing enough."

McIntyre had squabbled with Ms. Davis several weeks earlier over issues involving race, witnesses said. McIntyre was released without bail at his arraignment last night. "It was a very unfortunate event," he said afterwards. "I didn't mean for it to explode the way it did."
