USA: Davis, Sparks Trade Attacks
A big loser from Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks’s (pictured right) decision not to run for Congress is his gubernatorial primary rival, U.S. Rep. Artur Davis (pictured left). Rep. Davis now faces the likelihood of a divisive Democratic primary, making it tougher for the moderate Democrat to win over rural, white Democrats whose support he’ll need to win the office. Rep. Davis’s campaign wasted no time blasting Mr. Sparks after the liberal Democrat announced that he was sticking with the gubernatorial contest. “While Artur Davis is focused on a bold new agenda for our state, Ron Sparks has spent the last week trying to get permission from his political bosses in Montgomery to see if they would let him run for Congress in a district he does not even live in,” said Davis spokesman Alex Goepfert. “There is a reason why Ron Sparks continues to lag way behind Artur Davis in every poll — he has no core convictions, believes in nothing and as a result will say anything, and the last thing he ought to be is governor of Alabama.”
Mr. Sparks wasted no time returning the favor, calling the congressman a "man who breaks his word and betrays his supporters." "I am seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor against another man who has abandoned the values that put him in Congress. My opponent voted against vital health care reform measures. He voted to protect the rights of credit card companies rather than the rights of Alabama families. He thumbs his nose at the democratic leaders of our state and panders to right wing power brokers and big business contributors. He draws more of his support from Manhattan than he does from main street Alabama."
