New Jersey/Yemen: Jihadist Worked At 6 U.S. Nuclear Power Plants
Sharif Mobley, a natural-born U.S. citizen of Somali descent, is currently detained in Yemen and accused of trying to shoot his way out of a hospital there on March 7. His father, Charles Mobley, claims his son is not a terrorist, though a former friend said the young Muslim was becoming increasingly radical in his beliefs before he moved to Yemen to study Arabic.
Mobley had been a laborer at six U.S. nuclear power plants in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland before traveling to Yemen. According to both an unnamed U.S. law enforcement official and Mohammed Albasha, a spokesman for the Yemeni Embassy, there was no known connection between Mobley’s employment at the power plants and his Yemen stint.
Mobley was detained earlier this month in Sana’a, Yemen's capital, as one of 11 suspected al-Qaeda militants. Following his arrest, he was transferred to a hospital and treated for a week, while he befriended the guards assigned to him asking them to teach him Arabic. Mobley fooled his two guards into unshackling him by asking to join them for prayers, then attempted to escape and shot them, seriously wounding one and killing the other. Mobley was in contact with Anwar al-Awlaki, the al-Qaeda former imam now based in Yemen who was also in contact with three of the September 11 attacks hijackers, Christmas Day Bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, and Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan.
Colorado/Ireland: Second U.S. Woman Arrested Over Cartoonist Murder Plot
An American woman who converted to Islam last year and was lured to Europe by online extremists was arrested in Ireland in connection with a suspected plot to murder a Swedish cartoonist. Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, the second American woman to be linked to the plot, had vowed to "strap a bomb" for the jihad cause, said her mother Christine Mott.
Paulin-Ramirez, a single mother and former trainee nurse from Leadville, Colo., was one of seven people arrested in Ireland last week over an alleged conspiracy to murder Lars Vilks, a Swedish cartoonist who had depicted the prophet Mohammed with the body of a dog. Irish police have now released four of those arrested without charge and her parents confirmed Paulin-Ramirez was one of them.
