Some facts about the ancestry of the legendary producer. As you can see, he descends from musicians spanning nearly 500 years:
1. Mr. Jones is of Cameroonian, English, French, and Italian ancestry.
2. His DNA admixture test (which was done on the PBS genealogy show "African American Lives" in 2006) showed his ancestry to be 66% sub-Saharan African and 34% European.
3. His mitochondrial DNA test - which traces his black mom's mother's etc. line - was a match with the Tikar tribe, of northwestern Cameroon. The Tikar people are known within Cameroon for their music and art.
4. Through his mulatto dad's line, Mr. Jones is a descendant of Edward I, King of England (1239-1307); Louis IX, King of France (1214-1270) and William the Conqueror (~1028-1087). The descent from Edward I makes him a distant cousin of U.S. President Barack Obama, and Sarah Palin and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).
5. Through his mother's white ancestors, Mr. Jones is a descendant of the Lanier family of British royal musicians. This line originates from the Bassano family of Italian musicians and the Lanier family of French royal musicians from the early 1500s. Through John Lanier of Virginia (who emigrated from England in the mid-1600s), Mr. Jones is a distant cousin of America's first president George Washington, playwright Tennessee Williams and musician/poet Sidney Lanier.
6. His (white) ancestors fought in the Civil War, for the pro-slavery Confederacy. Sidney Lanier was even in a military prison. Mr. Jones thus qualifies for the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
