The Black Community Must Stop "Voting Our Race" And Instead Focus On "Managing The Outcomes For Our Community"

Asserts Constructive Feedback, a conservative blogger in metro Atlanta, Ga.: "On the subject of the crackdown on illegal immigration I read a Black person's views in which he said 'we are on the verge of a MAJORITY MINORITY nation and should not allow the divide and conquer strategy to work against us'. This is an example of this very same mindset. The mindset has us conditioned to be in a constant fight against some outside threat. The major benefit of this mindset is its unifying effect. It is a failure when it comes to developing organic competencies. The fact that the external enemy is such an important component of the unified group's actions and consciousness means that they are 'beside themselves', unaware of what they should do next when they slip up and find themselves victorious but all alone."

He continues his commentary: "As I listen to people who tell us to 'vote our race' I can't help but notice that those who are making this pronouncement are always within the 'correct consciousness' and are fully vetted. Thus their call for voting as a racial bloc is merely a demand for unity and the forward projection of the prevailing viewpoint. With this unity comes a certain amount of repression of divergent opinions and much worse - questioning of the prevailing agenda. This agenda is ubiquitously leftist in nature.  The stance is against the power structure which they say is oppressing them. They seem unable to note the need for transition when 'their guy' is now in power in city hall or in the White House. 'Their guy' need not be Black. Instead he/she is a leftist progressive of any color who shares the same theories on government."

More: "The main flaw in this drive is that they are unable to fully leverage the equal human resources that are abundant within the Black community. After placing the favorable person into power locally these activists and political groups that have assisted in this end exhibit a low level of proven ability to actually translate this potential into actual benefit. As the grievances continue they merely ramp up their activism against some external adversary, demanding that they receive the funding to allow them to be successful."

Fighting Africa's Fake-Drugs Monster

Using free enterprise to save lives in Africa
With no money, but a wealth of innovation, Ghanaian libertarian entrepreneur Bright Simons created an SMS-based system that is helping Nigeria fight a deadly onslaught of counterfeit medicines. The remedy is so successful it is now being tested in Ghana, and considered by other African states, to stem an avalanche that’s killing hundreds of thousands of people each year. From The Daily Maverick (South Africa): "mPedigree’s innovation is a simple solution that allows consumers to check whether the medicine they are about to give their children, or consume themselves, is safe and legitimate."

It continues: "'The service is very straight-forward. The manufacturer undertakes to put a unique code on the medicine that has a scratch panel which is easy for people to culturally integrate because it works in the same way as buying airtime for mobile phones.' The SMS-based service is free to consumers who scratch to find the code on the drugs they have bought. 'The consumer sends an SMS with the code to a service that verifies the drugs,' said Simons. The SMS is quickly answered with a response that says 'OK' or 'NO'. OK means that the medicine is authentic and safe to consume. 'NO' means the medicine is fake and could be life-threatening. 'The next line gives the name of the medicine and a picture of the box that can easily be compared by visual inspection to give added confidence. We also give consumers the expiry date and batch number.'"

More: "The success of the project, says Simons, is because of partnerships with world-class brands like Hewlett-Packard that manage the services’ infrastructure in Europe. 'The pharmaceutical industry will not just allow their systems to be managed by a third party without a track record. There are issues of confidentiality, reliability, security and integrity.' Crucial to mPedigree’s success has been offering the pharmaceutical industry the assurance that the integrity of their data is protected. With news that counterfeit operations have set up shop in Nigeria the solution arrived not a moment too soon. Trials are currently underway in Ghana and Simons said the project is currently being considered for Lebanon, Tanzania and Rwanda. Predictably the innovation is garnering global attention and has won Simons a slew of awards. What’s more gratifying for Simons is that mPedigree is saving lives."

"The Politics Of Love": A Black Republican Lead Character Will Be Featured In Upcoming Hollywood Movie

Some 21st-century "Mississippi Marsala"-type movie is in the pipeline, which will feature a lead character who is a black conservative Republican. He even looks sexy and sane. Real Bollywood writes: "Bollywood’s hot actress Mallika Sherawat, who has been a known name in Hollywood by this time, has signed her third Hollywood film titled Politics of Love [also known as 'Love, Barack' in India]. The film stars African-American actor Brian White, who is also a dancer, lacrosse player, stock broker, football player, and youth activist. The film is based on the 2008 US Presidential election, which was a historical moment as Obama became the first African-American president of the country. Politics of Love deals with a romance between an idealistic, Obama-worshipping Democrat, played by Mallika and a black Republican, essayed by Brian White. The movie will come up with a tagline - ‘Politics has never been this sexy’. The movie also stars Loretta Devine, Ruby Dee, Tracey Walter, Gerry Bednob, Gabrielle Dennis, and Ian Reed Kesler. William Dear will be directing the movie and Gary Goldstein has written it."

According to India Journal, Ms. Sherawat says she chose the film because “the script was excellent”, she “wanted to do an American-style romantic comedy that broke boundaries”, and “because of all the talented people who were working on the film”. She also thought it was “great, that an American movie never had a male lead role as a black Republican before.”

Sarah Palin's New Book

From the UK's Daily Mail, about the conservative Republican politico (hat tip: Black & Right): "She's the all-American heroine as famous for her patriotism as her gaffe-prone interviews. Now Sarah Palin is launching her second book with a cover to match her heart-on-sleeve brand of politics. The Republican is pictured wearing two items of U.S. flag jewellery and holding a fist to her chest on the front of America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag."

More: "The title of the publication is sure to strike a chord with supporters who love her traditional family values combined with a strong Christian faith. Due to be published in November, the book is the follow-up to her bestseller Going Rogue. The million copy-selling biography was published by Harper Collins last year and the same company is behind her new book."

Maxine Waters Faces Ethics Charges

We just got through with Rep. Charlie Rangel's ethics violations, and now another Congressional Black Caucus member is in trouble. A U.S. House panel is preparing to accuse Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.)  of at least one ethics violation in her efforts to help a bank with ties to her husband, and the longtime liberal Los Angeles Democrat plans to fight the charges in a House trial.

Rep. Waters came under scrutiny last year after OneUnited Bank, one of the nation's largest black-owned banking institutions, received $12 million in bailout funds. The funding came three months after Rep. Waters, a senior member of the committee that oversees banking, helped arrange a meeting between officials of the bank, other minority-owned financial institutions and Treasury Department representatives. Her husband, Sidney Williams, had owned stock in the bank and served on its board. Rep. Waters has previously said that she fully disclosed her husband's ties to the bank.

Chelsea Clinton Gets Married: Bookerista Response

Nice Vera Wang gown, Chelsea
She married her longtime boyfriend just before sunset, in an interfaith ceremony (Jewish/Methodist) at the Astor Courts estate in upstate New York. Best wishes to the newlyweds (see more wedding pictures here). I see some bookeristas are sourpusses on the new Mrs. Mezvinsky's wedding day (although I do concur with their claim that the media would've covered this $3 million-$5 million wedding differently if it was, say, former President George W. Bush's still-unmarried daughter Barbara). Are we now castigating folks for the sins of their relatives?! SMH

As long as the wedding was paid for by Mr. and Mrs. Clinton and/or the Mezvinsky family, then I have no problem with the price tag....which means goods and services were purchased, folks were hired to oversee various details. I.e., they generated revenue for the economy...I see Chelsea (allegedly) made sure to get a $10 million infidelity clause inserted into the pre-nuptial agreement. Ol' boy cheats on her, he's gonna pay big time...

Maria, a conservative blogger, opines about the nuptials: "So Chelsea Clinton is marrying the son of a convicted felon. Shocker. I would expect nothing less from the liberal elite. I would be willing to bet my bottom dollar, however, that Hillary Clinton was beyond pissed off with Chelsea’s choice of this mate. Hillary just had to get over it and get over herself. By now she’s quite skilled at sucking it up for appearance sake. Haha. As for Bill Clinton, I’m sure Chelsea has daddy wrapped around every finger on her former party-girl hands. Bill looks to me like the gushing daddy, completely enamored of his little girl. It’s cool. That’s the way it ought to be, parents loving their children, fathers in love with their daughters, mothers in love with their sons. It’s all very sweet. Vomitable, sometimes, but sweet nonetheless."

The proud Clintons, with their daughter & new son-in-law
She continues her commentary: "Liberal behavior just seems so akin, even synonymous with outlaw and criminal. No wonder they assign themselves as caretakers and advocates to the less fortunate. Apparently it’s the magic ingredient required to foster their Robinhood mentality. Who knows, maybe determination and grit will help Chelsea and Marc smash through the eventuality of their genetic make-up. Stranger things have been known to happen. I imagine there’s nothing more scrum-delicious than lavishness in uncertain times. Enjoy your nuptials Clintons. It’s a good thing you’re Democratic liberals and not conservative Republicans. Otherwise, police and national guard would have to be summoned to restrain the violent protestors. Whew! Sometimes it pays to be on the liberal side of things. Thugs are our friends."

Politik Ditto, a conservative Democratic blogger in New York City, wonders why the wedding's price tag has gotten little criticism from the media: "3 million! Are you kidding me?!? Where's all the liberal badmouthing about how ridiculous it is to spend such a crazy amount of money for a wedding? During a recession no less? George W. Bush only spent $100,000 for his daughter's wedding and the MSM critics were all over that. Then too Chelsea Clinton is such a pretentious douche that you just know there's little chance this wedding lasts longer than a couple of years."

Bettina Reaves, a conservative Republican: "Don't fall for the Bill and Hillary Clinton - ma & pa Kettle routine - Who in the world cared about Chelsea Clinton one way or the other? The [D]ems are already trying to groom Hillary and 'reinvent her' for 2012! Don't believe it people.

Essence Interview With David Webb, Part 2

David Webb, spokesman for the Tea Party Federation
The liberal black women's magazine interviewed David Webb, a tea party leader and conservative Republican radio host in New York City: Excerpts:

Politics and policies aside, how did you feel when the country elected the first African-American president? I have two trains of thought on that: I looked at the man's policies and I didn't like them. I listened to the President in his own words and looked at his record in the State senate and I didn't like his policies. It wasn't the man. He could have been Black, White, any color, I still didn't like his policies. He was the most liberal senator. He had some views about how we should run the country that I thought could be detrimental. I didn't lose or gain any pride when he won because I wasn't invested in his color. I wanted a president that was going to be good for the country, so although I wasn't vested in his color, I was vested in his policies. I sat on a panel with Mayor David Dinkins on inauguration night and I said if President Barack Obama acts as he did with his voting record in the Senate then we are going to see an ideological president, and ideology trumps common sense. We don't need ideology, we need common sense policies that are good for the country.

Webb also co-founded New York City's tea party group
What are your thoughts on the Obama presidency to date? Unfortunately, I've been proven right in my point of view that these policies are not good and they're not thought out. We're bailing out a failed company in GM. We've just given them another $6 billion dollars while the old GM owes another $1.7 billion. We have invested $146 billion into Fannie and Freddie Mac but yet we give them programs. Our policies are not good. It's not the man... I don't care about the man's color.

President Obama recently signed the Healthcare Reform Bill. What are your thoughts on it? No American could read 2000 pages and debate it in the time they were ramming these things through. Healthcare is a kitchen table issue. People talk about it every day. Women are the biggest informed group on healthcare just because of the nature of our society. So women were the ones that stood up and said, 'Whoa, I understand this because I deal with the doctors and the insurance plan and I have to fight with the insurance company over this.' We need healthcare insurance reform, we need reform in the structure of healthcare, certainly, but they're two different things. Instead of having real reform we got a 2000-page monstrosity filled with bureaucratic growth, government takeover of healthcare and a program that, now that its being vetted by the Congressional Budget Office, is $160 billion in the hole, which we [Tea Party 365] said it would be.

Chicago Youth Shot 13-22 Times: When The Indictment Called "THEY" Is Not Available For Exploitation

Constructive Feedback, a conservative blogger in metro Atlanta, Ga., wonders: when will black political operatives focus on crime within Black America as much as they do the tea party movement?: "The terrorizers of this particular community in Chicago, and so many others where Black people live in our highest concentrations come from WITHIN the domain of the community. Thus, I argue that a MARCH is not the most effective tool to foment change in the consciousness of those who have so much contempt for the life of a fellow human being that he would shoot him between 13 and 22 times - UNCERTAIN of the identi[t]y of the human who's life he took. Not giving a DAMN about the human beings who are extended to the being that he is about to slay. Clearly something with more fortitude than a march is needed."

Constructive Feedback argues that there is disconnectedness between black political operatives and the main threat terrorizing too many communities in Black America: "If the Southern States of the past were 'Killing Fields' for Black people and thus required the interdiction of  an array of forces to ensure the wellbeing and safety for the Black community then why aren't the same observations being made of today's 'killing fields' in which an inordinate amount of Black people are allowed to live their final moments on this Earth? Unfortunately this requires a bit of SELF-INDICTMENT and a framework for change. Since self-correction is so rare among groups - our community is bound to suffer even more of these senseless deaths as they don't present the usual suspects with the exploitable vector by which to operate upon."

Uganda: Lukyamuzi Urges African Leaders To Promote Good Maternal Health Services

John Ken Lukyamuzi, the President of Uganda's Conservative Party, has urged African leaders to integrate comprehensive health services to promote good health among African states. The moderate-conservative, who is a former parliamentarian, proposes having tax waivers on the treatment of pregnant women and children as a method that African leaders should implement to promote good health.

Mr. Lukyamuzi argues that this would help reduce the maternal mortality on the continent since there will be increased access to quality treatment of pregnant mothers. He also asks African leaders to petition the Global Fund, which is currently focusing on HIV/AIDS and malaria, to include maternal health on the list of health projects they support.

Should Arizona Secede From The U.S.?

Is a question that Bob Parks asks, after reading an op-ed in The Washington Times editorial asking the same question. The conservative Republican blogger in Virginia writes: Should Arizona secede? And if Arizona did secede, how many other states would want to follow?"

He continues his commentary: "Considering how Arizona’s been demonized by the president, progressive activists, celebrities and professional athletes, and their media; boycotted by other states and cities; are being reimbursed minimally by the federal government for the costs associated with illegal immigration and the laws the fail to enforce; who could blame them? Think about it: who would want to live in a state where illegal aliens weren’t wanted...?"

Booker Rising response: Hold on there, partner, with the anti-Union talk. Now, personally, there are a few states that I wouldn't mind seceding from America. However, longstanding jurisprudence (more specifically, the Texas v. White case in 1869) holds that the U.S. Constitution does not permit a state to secede from the Union.

ARMSTRONG WILLIAMS COMMENTARY: An Argument For The Flat Tax In America

The conservative Republican pundit in Washington, D.C. opines: "One idea for simplification would be to abolish progressive taxation and institute a single, flat tax on all personal and business income. The Bible teaches us to tithe ten percent of our income. It does not ask one person to tithe more of their income if they are rich and less of their income if they are poor. By tithing ten percent, each pays to the common trust an equal proportion of their means. This practice alone would virtually eliminate the need for the army of accountants, tax lawyers and government agencies dedicated to enforcing and mitigating the laws of this country. But more importantly, it’s what the founders envisioned – a tax levied based on the population, and not ability to pay. Perhaps they saw the inherent political danger in allowing politicians to vary this or that constituency’s tax burden, which would be an invitation to the very kind of class warfare we’re engaged in today. Imagine a nation in which all are in – everyone pays the same amount to the government. What would such a nation look like?"

Mr. Williams continues his commentary about the flat tax: "First, you’d eliminate the classes of people who are able to convince politicians to tax another class for their own benefit. How different would our nation look if everyone who lobbied for this or that benefit had to contemplate paying out of his own hard-earned paycheck to fund it? The calculus certainly would change. The entire nation would have to buy into a proposal – literally – before a constituency could act in its own self-interest. Taxpayers at the low-income end of the spectrum might think twice about whether they want to be taxed on the few dollars they earn to obtain some benefit, or whether they’d rather take their chances and work harder to get more pay. Instead of eagerly anticipating, for instance, the health-care bill that was signed into law this year because it would benefit them at no cost, those who thought this way during the debate might have looked closer at the legislation if they knew that they, too, would be paying higher taxes – just as much higher as the rich guy on the other side of town – to receive that benefit."

Obama: Today's Chief Gnostic

Asserts the political science professor and conservative Republican: "In his 'Ryrie Study Bible' (1978), the great theologian Dr. Charles Ryrie had this important note on Gnosticism and its place in biblical history:

The heresy of Gnosticism had begun to make inroads among churches in John's day. Among its teachings were: 1) knowledge is superior to virtue; 2) the nonliteral sense of Scripture is correct and can be understood only by a select few; 3) evil in the world precludes God's being the only Creator; 4) the incarnation is incredible because deity cannot unite itself with anything material such as a body (Docetism); and 5) there is no resurrection of the flesh. The ethical standards of many Gnostics were low, so John emphasized the reality of the incarnation and the high ethical standard of the earthly life of Christ.
Doesn't the ancient cult of Gnosticism, which systematically sought to pervert and denigrate Christianity, sound strangely similar to modern political liberalism, which, since the Enlightenment Age, systematically sought to pervert and eliminate Christianity from the marketplace of ideas?"

He continues his commentary: "Following the continuum from the ancient cult of Gnosticism, to humanism and secular liberalism formed during the Enlightenment, to the 20th-century Progressive Movement, to post-modern times under President Barack Obama, we are faced with the fact that Obama is the embodiment of the Gnostic heresy. Yes, Obama sat in the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years soaking up racist Black Liberation Theology. Yes, Obama claims to be a Christian, yet his socialist policies over the past 18 months have done more to undermine Christianity and every aspect American exceptionalism than did the three former fascist presidencies of Woodrow Wilson, FDR and LBJ. Yes, Obama arrogantly intoned: 'We are the ones we've been waiting for' and 'I want to fundamentally transform America.'"

Final thoughts: "All Americans of goodwill should join [the late German political philosopher Eric] Voegelin's fight against political tyranny, for it was he who 80 years ago exposed communism as the new 'secular salvation; the latest of man's attempt to shortcut heaven and have it on earth.' Let us today apply Voegelin's brilliant intellect and strategies to defeat Obama's progressivism, whose dystopia, alienation, anti-constitutionalism and legalized thievery has already brought a measure of heaven to hell in America."

Michael Steele Cancels Appearance At National Association Of Black Journalists Convention Due To "Food Poisoning"

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was forced to cancel a highly anticipated appearance today before a national meeting of black journalists in San Diego, Calif. due to food poisoning. "While traveling out West the Chairman came down with a bad case of food poisoning," an RNC spokesman said in an email to CNN. "He is disappointed to miss the opportunity to take part in this valuable dialogue and looks forward to engaging with NABJ in the very near future."

The moderate-conservative Republican chairman had been in New Mexico on Thursday to attend a fundraiser for GOP gubernatorial nominee Susana Martinez. The RNC spokesman told CNN that Mr. Steele had not been to the hospital, but that the chairman had consulted a doctor.

President Obama: "African Americans Are Mongrels". Bookerista Response, Part 2

Bookeristas ain't done filleting the U.S. president for this eyebrow-raising remark yesterday on television, as "mongrels" is a term straight out of the white-supremacist playbook:

Tony Campbell: "A View On 'Mongrel People'"

The moderate Republican commentator in Maryland writes: "I do not like being categorized as a mongrel. It is a ridiculous and insulting statement. If George W. Bush, or another white politician said those words, the NAACP, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be all over the airwaves calling for a public apology. I am not part of a 'mongrel people.' This is not how you have a discussion on race relations. I expect better judgment from the President of the United States. If this is how he sees African-Americans, perhaps it is time for them to find a new candidate."

Magic Negro Watch: "Obama - 'You Negro Mongrels'"

The conservative blogger in Kansas argues that the president using the term in an already racially charged atmosphere was "retarded": "If I’m not mistaken folks a mongrel is a type of dog that is considered undesirable among breeders because its breed can not easily be determined. It is not highly insulting to refer to human beings as mongrels? Please if I wrong folks let your boy know. This is why dude uses a teleprompter because his [brain] is completely incapable of speaking unscripted. I’m just amazed....but not surprised I never thought he was very bright and even as I type this I continue to marvel at just how gullible or clueless you white people were in voting for the moronic f___k."

Ron Miller: "Mongrels"

The conservative Republican blogger in Maryland opines: "Margaret Sanger, the eugenicist and founder of Planned Parenthood, frequently spoke of blacks as 'mongrels' and established her organization to help rid the world of its 'mongrel peoples.' In fact, 'mongrel' was a popular term among eugenicists, chief among them Adolf Hitler, who frequently decried the 'resultant mongrel people' that came from the intermarrying of the races."

He continues: "'Mongrel' was one of the more common words used by the Klan and white supremacists to describe the threat of interracial relationships and their offspring, and it is used by them to this day. The dictionary has many definitions for 'mongrel' but this one best describes how people typically use the term: 'Derogatory term for a variation that is not genuine; something irregular or inferior or of dubious origin (WordNet)'. As a father of biracial children, I may call them a lot of things, but I can assure you that 'mongrel' is not a word that would cross my lips, even accidentally. Some are claiming his use of the word was an attempt to defuse it and take away its power to offend and, for that, he should be commended. Whatever. Since we’ve confirmed what we knew all along, that the Democrats are stirring the race pot in order to distract us from their failures, he needs to do a whole lot more to defuse the situation."

Black Lawmakers Irate Over Rahm Emanuel's $1.5 Billion Promise To Sen. Blanche Lincoln

African-American lawmakers are irate that the Obama administration has promised Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) $1.5 billion in farm aid while claiming it can’t pay a landmark legal settlement with black farmers.

The letter to U.S. President Obama was spurred by behind-the-scenes deal-making in the U.S. Senate as part of an effort to pass small-business legislation. White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel promised Sen. Lincoln, who sponsored the provision, that the administration would find a way to pay out $1.5 billion in disaster assistance to farmers while they wait for programs in the 2008 farm bill to be implemented. At the same time, the administration has told black farmers it lacks the funds to pay a $1.2 billion agreement they reached with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1999 to settle the Pigford class-action lawsuit. CBC members say that if the administration can find $1.5 billion within its administrative funds to pay mostly white farmers in Arkansas and other states, it can pay black farmers who suffered racial discrimination.

Booker Rising response: In a rare moment, the Congressional Black Caucus is right. However, The White House knows that the Congressional Black Caucus are punks so it's not scared of them. As I've said many times, the CBC doesn't even know how (or is unwilling) to utilize the power that it has. With their 42-member bloc, they could shut down virtually any business in the U.S. House. Just tell the president, "Until these black farmers get paid the money that was promised to them due to historic discrimination, we will not vote on [pick key bill]." And mean it.

Coming Soon: Alvin Greene, The Movie

Alvin Greene: screen idol?
From Yahoo! News: "Alvin Greene didn't stop to chat with reporters who recently trekked to Manning, S.C., to watch his first campaign speech. But the [moderate] Democratic candidate did talk to Leslie Beaumont after the event. That’s because Beaumont and writer David Garrett are making a documentary on the unlikely Senate hopeful: 'Who Is Alvin Greene?'"

More about the documentary: "Both Beaumont and Garrett live in Los Angeles, and they have never made a campaign documentary. The filmmakers became interested in Greene after he came out of nowhere to win the primary. 'We're really fascinated with the story of this ordinary private citizen living in obscurity and then thrown in the limelight,' Beaumont said. So they contacted Greene by email and phone. Initially he wasn’t interested, she said. But they set up a meeting in South Carolina to try convincing him to let cameras follow him around. 'You have a great story,' Beaumont recalled telling him. 'This is a historic moment in time that needs to be documented.'"

SOPHIA NELSON COMMENTARY: Essence Magazine Offers Lesson On Race

The moderate pundit in Virginia writes a piece on CNN's website about why the controversial hiring of a white woman as Essence magazine's fashion editor is a teachable moment. She argues that Essence did the right thing in valuing merit over race: "It is significant because so many of us sisters lament regularly how we played by the rules, worked hard, got well-educated, networked, and still, somehow, always came up short in career success. We know better than anyone how hard it is to get a fair shake out here; how hard it is to find an open door of opportunity, where we can be judged for our business acumen, ideas, our abilities, and our vision. We get this most of all because we have all been there. My point: Essence is setting a very positive example in the magazine industry and at one of the world's largest corporations, Time Warner [which owns CNN], that talent not race matters."

More: "Sadly, what seems to be lost in this debate over race, gender and victims of racism in America is that a human being named Elliana Placas is right smack-dab in the middle. Like many of my sisters, I know what it's like to be the 'first' or the 'only.' It can be intimidating and isolating all at once. I can only imagine the impact that all of this has had on Ms. Placas (who, by the way, is Australian). Her world view must be vastly different from the racial obsessions that we play out here in America on a grand scale at least once per year. And she must be experiencing quite a bit of confusion, fear and isolation herself. For that I am sorry, because I have been there, and it is not a good place. My sisters, I ask all of us to reconsider the Biblical command 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.' We sisters are known for our strength and ability to weather storms in our careers and personal lives; we are used to being the 'only one' in the corporate boardroom, workplace or law office. We deal with it, and we make it work."

Final thoughts: "Perhaps we have become so accustomed to operating in this space that we forget that our white counterparts have no clue of what that feels like. None. And the reality is that it is challenging for them, too, when they are the 'only one' in the room. The only way they will ever know what it is like to walk a mile in our shoes is when we educate them by welcoming them into our world, our businesses, newspapers and magazines. In the final analysis, Essence magazine has done something groundbreaking, and we should applaud and support its decision. The sisters at Essence have taught us all to put qualifications over comfort zones, vision over tradition, and character over color. Thank you Essence once again for leading the way."

Government Motors

The Chevy Volt, an electric car
Mchael Bowen, a moderate-conservative Republican blogger discusses GM's new $41,000 electric car: "By my calculations, the 2010s will be the 70s. How can I tell? Lots of ways. And here is the harbinger of the 70s repeat. The Chevrolet Volt. It[s] environmental paranoia and its consequent emasculation of the American automobile. There is nothing quite so stark as the difference between concept and reality, and perhaps that will be the hallmark of the Obama Era. Remember the Chevy Volt? That concept car that looked good? This cretinous slugwort certifies the new fashion of ugly green at any cost econoboxes. It is the Pacer of the decade - except that at least the Pacer was affordable. Nidermeier at the NYT spells it all out in painful detail..."

Mr. Bowen wonders if the United States of America will revert to the communist cars of old: "Now of course the Volt is a great deal more advanced than the Zapo 968. But try not to forget the Chevy Cruze, the non-ideologically bound version. Cheaper, faster, roomier, longer range. And less than half the price. Did I mention cheaper? My nickel says it performs better too both for the consumer as driver and businessman as profit-seeker. But the Chevy Cruze like all of those cars created in the bygone days don't pass the board of censors of the Obama Era. It doesn't get its little green stamp, and therefore is counter-revolutionary."

SIDE-EYE OF THE DAY: Laurence Fishburne's Teen Daughter Does Porn: "I Wanna Be A Famous Like Kim Kardashian"

Montana Fishburne, with her famous father
The black blogosphere is discussing the 19-year-old's debut project (where her name will  be 'Chippy-D'). From the New York Daily News: "According to a press release, Vivid Entertainment, which also distributed Kendra Wilkinson and Kim Kardashian's sex tape, will handle the release of Montana Fishburne's self-titled video, which is due out August 18th. She said she was inspired by Kim Kardashian, who shot to instant fame after her own sex tape was made public several years ago. 'I've watched how successful Kim Kardashian became and I think a lot of it was due to the release of her sex tape by Vivid,' Fishburne said in the press release. 'I'm hoping the same magic will work for me. I'm impatient about getting well-known and having more opportunities and this seemed like a great way to get started on it.'"

Booker Rising response: Lawd, where do I  begin in responding to this mess?! Some people will do anything to get attention. Can't Daddy open a few doors for acting auditions? Can't she go to college? It should be noted that Ms. Fishburne was turned down by Playboy to do a spread for them. Here is video (no nudity in it) of her and porn star Brian Pumper discussing her debut. However, to announce this debut on your dad’s birthday (Laurence Fishburne turns 49 today) is really low. The question that I must ask though: how much was Laurence Fishburne in this girl's life?! This must be some low self-esteem, get-back-at-Daddy BS.

Sweden: Nyamko Sabuni Advocates For Gypsy Rights

Ms. Sabuni
A truth commission is one of the proposals the Delegation for Romani Affairs today delivered to Swedish cabinet minister Nyamko Sabuni. The Discrimination Ombudsman has called on setting up a truth commission to promote awareness among the Roma - who have an 80% unemployment rate in Sweden - of their rights, create a youth leadership academy and establish a Roma cultural committee.

Minister Sabuni, a moderate-conservative, believes that the Roma as a minority group are more vulnerable than other groups in Swedish society are exposed to discrimination even though it is prohibited by the law. "The Roma are the only group in society where people can express discriminatory things against them without other people reacting," she said.

Roma/Gypsies
Ms. Sabuni and European Union Affairs Minister Birgitta Ohlsson have sent a letter to the European Commission asserting the responsibility of all EU member states for the Romas' situation. "The commission must take the initiative for an action plan that is binding for member states under which they must write specifically how they will ensure Roma access to employment, housing and the job market," said Minister Sabuni. "My concern is that a part of the EU member states treats its Roma citizens so badly that they are forced to leave their home countries and travel to other EU countries," she added.

The Death Of The Phone Call

Clive Thompson of Wired magazine writes (hat tip: Kevin Ross): "According to Nielsen, the average number of mobile phone calls we make is dropping every year, after hitting a peak in 2007. And our calls are getting shorter: In 2005 they averaged three minutes in length; now they’re almost half that. We’re moving, in other words, toward a fascinating cultural transition: the death of the telephone call. This shift is particularly stark among the young."

More: "Consider: If I suddenly decide I want to dial you up, I have no way of knowing whether you’re busy, and you have no idea why I’m calling. We have to open Schrödinger’s box every time, having a conversation to figure out whether it’s OK to have a conversation. Plus, voice calls are emotionally high-bandwidth, which is why it’s so weirdly exhausting to be interrupted by one. (We apparently find voicemail even more excruciating: Studies show that more than a fifth of all voice messages are never listened to.) The telephone, in other words, doesn’t provide any information about status, so we are constantly interrupting one another. The other tools at our disposal are more polite. Instant messaging lets us detect whether our friends are busy without our bugging them, and texting lets us ping one another asynchronously. (Plus, we can spend more time thinking about what we want to say.) For all the hue and cry about becoming an 'always on' society, we’re actually moving away from the demand that everyone be available immediately."

Booker Rising response: I've used only 40 minutes on my BlackBerry smartphone that I got about three weeks ago. This is what I find that I'm doing with my BlackBerry: (1) organize my to-do list & calendar; (2) listen to music (usually while I'm en route to somewhere); (3) read/respond to emails; (4) surf the Internet (usually while I'm waiting for someone/an appointment); (5) send text messages; and then a distant (6) make phone calls LOL. However, I get the feeling that plans with unlimited messenging, texting, Web, etc. will soon come to an end in the phone undustry.

SHAMARA RILEY COMMENTARY: How Familial DNA Can Help Crime Victims

Lonnie Franklin Jr., alleged serial killer caught via familial DNA
Today I have an op-ed over at theGrio.com, discussing why familial DNA searches should be expanded as a crime-fighting tool: "After 25 years, the Los Angeles Police Department recently arrested alleged serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr., -- a.k.a. 'The Grim Sleeper' -- by partly using DNA evidence other than his own. 'The Grim Sleeper' case is the first time that an active familial DNA search has been used to solve a murder in America."

I continue my commentary: "How did they catch this alleged sexually predator and murderer of nine black women (and murderer of one man)? Using a familial DNA search, the crime lab compared the DNA left at the crime scenes with DNA samples in California's database of 1.3 million felons to search for near matches indicating possible relatives. The familial DNA search turned up 200 partial matches. Researchers then compared the Y chromosome (which is passed from father to son) found at the crime scene to the 200 partial matches. Only one result turned up: Franklin Jr.'s son, who had been convicted of a felony weapons charge. The police subsequently surveilled Franklin Jr. and directly connected him to the serial killings using DNA evidence left at a restaurant."

More: "Cold cases could get new life (as they have in Britain) using this technique. Fredrick Bieber, a Harvard medical professor who specializes in familial DNA searches, asserts that such searches could solve up to 40 percent more crimes in which DNA evidence is present. It would thus be a threat to public safety to not explore the familial DNA option as a crime-fighting tool, especially when more subjective tools like eyewitness identification and fingerprinting are used. Given the hundreds of people who have been exonerated thanks to DNA testing, familial DNA search could be beneficial in that arena. It could actually complement the good work of groups like the Innocence Project, by significantly lowering the number of people wrongfully accused in the first place. Familial DNA searches could help reduce the number of black crime victims by putting more perpetrators behind bars, and solve cold cases affecting our communities."

Snooki: Tea Party Activist?

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi
From Politico.com: "First, Snooki took on Obama over Twitter. Then, Obama said he didn't even know who she was [although video has surfaced that the president does know who she is]. And on Thursday night's second season premiere of MTV's 'Jersey Shore,' Snooki took the ball back, and went after Obama again. In one scene, Snooki — with her impressively orange tan — broke the shocking news that she's been staying away from her home away from home: Tanning salons."

More about Snooki's anti-tax stance: "'I don’t go tanning anymore because Obama put a 10% tax on tanning. McCain would never put a 10% tax on tanning. Because he’s pale and would probably want to be tan,' she said. Snooki was referring to a provision in the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act that mandates tanning salons impose a 10 percent tax on UV-ray sessions. Clearly, Obama can't relate to Snooki's problems, she added, commenting on Obama's skin color. 'Obama doesn’t have that problem. Obviously,' she said."

It should be noted that Snooki, who describes herself as an independent voter, voted for Sen. John McCain in the 2008 presidential election. Since the reality show "Jersey Shore" claims to be about young Italian-Americans....Did you know that she's not even Italian-American (she is from Chile, but adopted by Italian-Americans)?

7/29 EYEBROW-RAISING QUOTE OF THE DAY: President Obama: "African Americans Are Mongrels". Bookerista Response

Of course, this is the #1 quote coming out of U.S. President Barack Obama's appearance today on "The View", when Barbara Walters asked him why he doesn't identify as a biracial president. In my opinion, this doesn't quite rise to side-eye status because I understand what President Obama was trying to say. Genetic studies do show that the average American black is 80% sub-Saharan African (on average 47% Yoruba, 15% Bantu, and 14% Mandingo, with other groups rounding out the list) and 20% non-African (typically Northern European and/or Native American) in ancestry. And while some white folks are flipping out that he called them "mongrels" as well, it is also true that 1/3 of white Americans have black African ancestry.

However, President Obama should've chosen better language. Wasn't he the one who said, "words matter"? Surely he knows that "mongrel" has a derogatory, racist meaning in America:

President Obama also attempts to equate himself with the average black American. However, going back several generations before one finds a few white and/or Indian ancestors is quite different from being birthed by a white woman. Being of "indigenous" African American stock (for lack of a better term) who've been in the United States for centuries - with a unique historical experience in America - is quite different from someone who is African American due to an African father. President Obama's ethnic background is the exception, not the rule, in Black America (now, First Lady Michelle Obama is a different story).

Other bookeristas respond: James T. Harris, a conservative Republican radio host in Milwaukee, Wisc., reminds us of how the word has been used: "Robert 'KKK' Byrd: 'I will never fight with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.' And check this out: 'Americans are a mongrel people, half Jewified, half Negrofied' - Adolf Hitler."

He continues his commentary: "Holy Democrat Stockholm Syndrome! Mongrel is a word that [p]rogressive[s] of old used to describe humans of mixed heritage! Look how effortlessly Obama uses the word to describe himself, to describe his 'people'. Holy hook, line and sinker, Batman! Hitler was 'Jewified' himself wasn't he? Does Obama have contempt for his 'own people!'"

Sandra Rose, a conservative blogger in metro Atlanta, Ga., writes: "U.S. president Barack Obama appeared on ‘The View’ and promptly stirred up a hornet’s nest of controversy when he referred to blacks as 'a sort of mongrel people.' For those who aren’t familiar with the term: a mongrel is a type of dog that is considered undesirable among breeders because its breed can not easily be determined. It is highly insulting to refer to human beings as mongrels."

Ted Hayes on Illegal Immigration

Ted Hayes, aka the "Rasta Republican"
U.S. federal Judge Susan Bolton has blocked part of the controversial Arizona immigration law that would have allowed the police to check the immigration status of individuals in the U.S. state. In response to the injunction, Arizona governor Jan Brewer said she planned to appeal the ruling. Ted Hayes, a community activist and conservative Republican in Los Angeles who opposes illegal immigration, said the decision is a slap in the face to African Americans and that illegal immigrants need to stop piggybacking off the Civil Rights Movement.

“These folks have come into my country, in the name ironically, of people of color, my color, skin color and the civil rights legacy and they are equating their struggle of whatever they’re suffering in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Korea, and their struggle is not to be equated with the struggle of my enslaved ancestors and emancipated forefathers”, said Mr. Hayes.

He argued that illegal immigration robbed him of his civil rights legacy and that the illegal immigration movement is not the new civil rights era, nor is it a race issue. “These people [Latinos] who are claiming color are actually white people,” argued Mr. Hayes. “They are not black people.” The original civil rights fight for African Americans is not over, argued Mr. Hayes, thus there cannot be a new one.

Mr. Hayes asserted that Latino community is biased against blacks. “They’re killing us,” said Mr. Hayes. “They shoot us down the streets. They push us out of our schools; they push us out of our homes, out of our jobs.”

He said the solution in to address the problems in the home countries of illegal immigrants to prevent the need for migrants to flee to America.

Obama Support Falls Among Blacks, Hispanics

Although the majority of folks in both groups still support U.S. President Barack Obama, his support is decreasing. From the Washington Examiner (hat tip: African American Conservatives): "Gallup’s latest weekly compilation of polling data on President Obama’s job approval rating shows him at 85 percent among black Americans, down from a 94 percent approval rating among blacks as recently as March.  The 85 percent figure is also Obama’s lowest-ever as president among African-Americans in the Gallup weekly poll.  The poll data is from July 19 to 25, meaning Gallup sampled opinion as the Shirley Sherrod matter, and the Obama administration’s handling of it, exploded into controversy."

More: "Obama’s approval rating among Hispanics in the latest poll, 52 percent, is also his lowest rating among that group in Gallup’s weekly measurement.  He was in the low-to-mid 60’s earlier with Hispanics earlier this year."

Punishment Disparity Narrowed Between Crack & Powder Cocaine

The federal punishments for crimes involving crack and powder cocaine will be more closely aligned under a law that passed the U.S. House yesterday and goes to U.S. President Barack Obama for his signature. Advocates declared it a huge improvement to what they say is a racially discriminatory and prison-clogging policy that treated crack offenses 100 times more harshly than powder offenses.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and others have worked for nine years to reduce the disparity but were thwarted by former President George W. Bush's administration. In March, Rep. Sessions reached a deal with Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), that raises the amount of crack that triggers the mandatory minimum five-year sentence from 5 grams to 28 grams and leaves alone the amount of powder that triggers the same sentence, 500 grams. The new law reduces the disparity from 100:1 to 18:1. It also eliminates the minimum mandatory sentence for simple possession.

The 100:1 disparity was approved in 1986 during a crack epidemic in many American cities. A 2007 Sentencing Commission report showed that 82 percent of all crack cocaine offenders are black, while blacks make up 27 percent of powder cocaine offenders.

An analysis by the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the law will reduce the federal prison population by 1,550 from 2011 to 2015, and save about $42 million.

Essence Hires A White Fashion Editor And An Uproar Ensues: Bookerista Perspectives

Constructive Feedback: "Essence Magazine Hires A White Fashion Director - Some Diversity Advocates Are Pissed"

The conservative blogger in metro Atlanta, Ga., writes: "All one needs to do is sit back and observe the behaviors and reactions of the biggest 'diversity advocates' to see how much they themselves are racialist. When it comes to diversity - many operatives merely use it for their own exclusive advantage, seeking to have their long time adversaries to unilaterally 'disarm'. In the case of Essence Magazine there is the case of a 'Black power' institution (ie: an entity that has the power to hire, fire and has a certain level of economic wherewithal). They stay true  their mission for diversity by hiring the person who they believe is most qualified to lead an important division of the company. In response to their decision to hire a White woman in a pivotal role some Black readers threaten to cancel their magazine subscription in protest."

Constructive Feedback continues his commentary about the Essence situation: "We all know the likely defenses: 'Since Vogue and Elle would never hire a Black person as their fashion director, why should the Black magazine, Essence, do anything similar by hiring a White?' I didn't realize that there was such a 'quid pro quo' or arbitrary conditionalism involved with 'diversity'?  It was sold as the 'right thing to do'. If we consider the quantity of  job opportunity seats under 'White control' as compared with those under the control of Blacks such a response that is triggered based on this woman's race is not strategically sound."

Duane Brayboy: "Is Essence Magazine Sending Itself To Hell In A Handbasket?"

The conservative blogger in metro Atlanta, Ga. argues that the brouhaha is more of nothing being made into something: "Okay, I get the whole notion that this is a magazine that targets Black women and their interests. I also get the notion that a Black woman would have been a better pick because Black women instinctively should know what other Black women like. I get that. But do we really believe Ellianna Placas (the new contributing fashion director at Essence – according to her Linkedin page) is going to go buckwild and veer completely away from Black fashion? I mean, really? She will be under the very Black Ms. Angela Burt-Murray whose resume includes the Executive Editor role for both Teen People Magazine (a magazine that targets White teens) and Honey Magazine. So again, with a Black woman running this magazine, folks once again show that at the end of the day with all the whining and moaning about wanting to see more Blacks in charge, we STILL think that a White subordinate can overthrow people like Ms. Murray. Just amazing!"

He continues: "Dr. Dr. King, That '....not being judged by the color of your skin' part of your dream will not be realized by some anytime soon. (rest in) Peace."

ANDREW MWENDA COMMENTARY: Why We Should Pull Out Of Somalia

Asserts the Ugandan libertarian journalist: "Since Uganda was bombed on 7/11, Al-Shabaab 'terrorist' group in Somali[a] claimed responsibility. There has been a lot of tough talk in Kampala. President Yoweri Museveni has promised to hit back at Al-Shabaab by increasing our troops in that country. Many Ugandans support the government in its posturing for a 'surge.' Yet the surge will increase rather than reduce the problem of the fragmentation of the state in Somalia. It will also increase the financial and human cost on the state of Uganda. No amount of UPDF [Ugandan People's Defense Force] presence in Somalia will bring peace to that country. Only Somalis can. Uganda’s troops can only assist in peace-building if there are strong internal forces with a strong vested interest in peace. Somalia needs a warlord able to mobilise resources and build a military capability to take effective control of the entire country."

He continues his commentary: "I harbour a fundamental disagreement with democracy and human rights groups in Africa. Democracy exists in stable and effective states, not in anarchy. Yet we are continuously told that only a democratic order built around a consensus would bring a stable peace in Somalia. It is an obvious fallacy to argue that liberal democracy gives birth to liberal democracy. What Somalia needs is a military strongman with the organisational ability to marshal resources and bribe, coerce and cajole other military and civilian groups together as Yoweri Museveni did in Uganda in 1986. The result of this foreign interference [mainly by the United States] with a naïve notion of democracy has been to stifle the evolution of a militarily strong organisation that could establish order in the country."

More: "Therefore, failure of the evolution of an effective state in Somali[a], and the rise of Al-Shabaab, are more a byproduct of nature of international intervention than domestic warlord politics. It is also difficult to see the strategic gains for Uganda in this intervention. However, it is strategically important for Museveni. Ugandan troop presence in Somalia helps improve his standing in Washington DC, a factor that is vital for his domestic politics. In fact, when he came to power, US President Barack Obama showed a cold attitude to Museveni; quietly despising him for clinging to power and presiding over a corrupt system. Now, with Ugandans paying with blood for American geo-strategic interests in this region, Museveni is indispensable to Obama’s plans for this region. Because the gains from Somalia are personal to Museveni rather than national to Uganda, I think we should pull out our troops; not because we are afraid of Al-Shabaab, but because we are not doing Somalis any good."

Court Upholds Expulsion Of Christian Student (Julea Ward) Who Opposes Homosexuality

Julea Ward refuses to counsel gay clients
Samuel Gonzalez ain't pleased with a federal judge who has ruled in favor of Eastern Michigan University, who removed a Christian student from its graduate program in school counseling over her belief that homosexuality is morally wrong. The conservative Republican blogger in New York City writes: "In Bamazuela, (aka United States under the Obama regime) intolerance towards the Christian point-of-view has been given the courts stamp of approval. Americans are being asked to accept the building of a Muslim mosque at Ground Zero as a demonstration of her religious freedom, but a Christian student at Eastern Michigan University is being ordered to set aside her Biblical beliefs and undergo 'thought control' re-education classes that imposes the 'Leftist way of thinking' as prescribed by the State of Michigan. And all because she has the audacity to believe what the Bible, and incidentally the Koran and Torah teaches, that homosexuality is immoral. Begging the question, 'What happened to America?'"

What A Strange Webb, He Weaved

Sen. Jim Webb calls for ending affirmative action
The moderate Republican pundit thinks that Sen. Jim Webb made some good points in his controversial op-ed calling for the end of affirmative action: namely, that only indigenous black Americans should qualify for affirmative action programs. However, he disagrees with the moderate Democratic politician's argument that poor whites are equally suffering: "His editorial was titled, 'Diversity and the Myth of White Privilege.'  I am in total agreement with his central premise — that Blacks should be the only group entitled to any form of affirmative action, not all the immigrants who have entered the country since its inception.  Webb starts his piece by stating, 'America still owes a debt to its black citizens, but government programs to help all ‘people of color’ are unfair. They should end.' Those who have followed my writing over the years know I have strongly advocated this same point of view. There is no justification for Hispanic, African, or Asian immigrants being eligible for any diversity programs. They faced none of the horrific acts of discrimination that Blacks experienced during and after slavery."

He continues his commentary: "Where I strongly disagree with Webb is in his comparison of the plight of poor whites to that of Blacks. The poorest of all whites have never been subjected to the destructive forces of slavery and all of its byproducts. I find the comparison quite offensive and it shows Webb’s lack of intellectual capital when writing about such a complicated issue. In his piece, Webb states, 'I have dedicated my political career to bringing fairness to America’s economic system and to our work force, regardless of what people look like or where they may worship. Unfortunately, present-day diversity programs work against that notion, having expanded so far beyond their original purpose that they now favor anyone who does not happen to be white.' I guess someone forgot to tell him that white, suburban, middle-class women are the single biggest beneficiary of affirmative action!"

More commentary from Mr. Jackson, about Sen. Webb: "Webb knows he will face a tough reelection in 2012, so he decided to call on the grandchildren of the Southern Strategy (a strategy Richard Nixon created to push Blacks out of the Republican Party to gain conservative white Democrats). This is his way of telling poor whites that he is one of them! The amazing thing is that Webb received 85% of the Black vote in 2006. No Democrat fears the Black vote, so we are constantly being undervalued. The sad part is that Webb will still get upwards of 85% of the Black vote in 2012. There are no real or perceived repercussions of alienating the Black vote because everyone knows we won’t do anything [but] complain."

Uh, I Think Cleveland Folks Are Still A Lil' Salty About Lebron James' Exit From The Cleveland Cavaliers Team

Warning: the below video contains foul language. James Harris, a conservative Republican radio host in Milwaukee, Wisc., writes: "Do not! I repeat, DO NOT wear a LeBron James jersey, a Miami Heat LeBron James jersey to a Cleveland Indians game! Wow."

Sandra Rose, a conservative blogger in metro Atlanta: "It probably wasn’t a good idea for this Cleveland couple to wear their LeBron James Miami Heat jerseys to a Yankees game in Cleveland last night. When they showed up at the stadium in their Heat attire, a mob formed and the couple were quickly escorted out of the ballpark by police before any violence ensued."

She later continues: "My bad. After reviewing the tape I see that the guy’s gi[r]lfriend was wearing a Cleveland Indians [baseball] jersey, not a Miami Heat [basketball] jersey like her boyfriend. Yes, this is still a free country where you can wear a jersey expressing your favorite team, but common sense should have prevailed. They should have known that LeBron is still a sensitive subject inside the Cleveland city limits."

JAMES SHIKWATI COMMENTARY: Africa's Century: Is The West Changing Tactics?

Asks the libertarian head of the Inter-Region Economic Network (Kenya): "Barack Obama on his part has given Africa a foothold at the door which we ought not to let go. For years, commentators have pointed out that conflict and war in Africa had a lot to do with external interests than internal. It defied logic that people supposedly living on less than a dollar a day could afford bazookas, expensive phones and machine guns. United States of America President’s signing into law a legislation that requires companies to certify whether their products contain minerals from rebel-controlled mines in Congo and surrounding countries is a great step for Africa."

He continues his commentary: "In comparison to stomping troops in Champs Elysees [during France's Bastille Day celebration on July 14], this is a [piece of] legislation that if Western powers adopted a similar approach will put to an end rape cases against our daughters and women; it will give families stability to take their children to school; reduce armed conflict; promote genuine governance in Africa and nurture a culture of sound business environment.  Africans should be aware that this is but a foothold – the door is not open yet.  Africans must seize this opportunity and invest in addressing the causes of conflict on the continent instead of being duped to chase secondary causes of instability."

More: "I could not agree more with Gordon Brown that this is Africa’s moment. African scholars, think tanks, business, policy makers and political leaders ought to keep track of the renewed interest on the continent. Check this out, the World economy is in doldrums and Africa experiences a surge of interest and even praise. Asia, Latin America, and the West seem to know something about our continent that we don’t. The re-emerging and the old powers are through their actions, stating that the African continent holds the key to stabilizing the world economy. Are we ready? Are we going to fall for stomping in [the] Bastille Day parade the way we did with the political flags our nations received at independence? Are we going to be satisfied with the foothold the Obama administration has accorded the continent to address minerals (our wealth) as the main source of our misery? It is Africa’s time but only if we consciously work to make it so."

Ethics Panel Accuses Rangel Of 13 Violations

House investigators today accused veteran New York Rep. Charles Rangel of 13 violations of congressional ethics standards, throwing a cloud over his four-decade political career and raising worries for fellow Democrats about the fall elections. The allegations -- which include failure to report rental income from vacation property in the Dominican Republic or more than $600,000 in other income on his congressional financial disclosure statements -- came as lawyers for the liberal Democrats and the House ethics committee worked on a plea deal.

The alleged violations of House standards of conduct also include using congressional letterhead to solicit donations for a center for public service to bear Rangel's name on the New York campus of the City College of New York. Rep. Rangel was also accused of accepting a rent-stabilized property in Manhattan for his campaign office and initially not paying federal taxes on the Dominican Republic property.

The charges, agreed upon after a two-year probe, were read in a public session of the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, as the ethics committee is formally known. Rep. Rangel, 80, did not attend. The session set the stage for a committee trial, expected to be held in September. Democrats had hoped to avoid such a public confrontation as November elections approach.

Under the tentative plea deal, it was not clear how many of the 13 charges that Rep. Rangel agreed to accept. A congressional trial could be avoided only if Rep. Rangel admitted to substantial violations, or resigned. Punishment could range from a report criticizing his conduct to a reprimand or censure by the House, or a vote to expel him -- which is highly unlikely. Any agreement would have to be approved by Rep. Rangel and ethics committee members.
