11/30 OLD-SCHOOL SONG OF THE DAY: Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five, "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" (1946)

I've never heard of the song before last week, but it caught my attention. While "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" is considered a jump blues cut, you can hear the incoming rock & roll sound that would become so popular some years later. "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" was a #1 hit on the R&B chart (then known as the Race Records chart) for 18 weeks, a feat only equally by Joe Liggins' "The Honeydripper". The song was a crossover smash, hitting #7 on the pop chart as well.

BOOKERISTA DEBATE: Should Herman Cain Drop Out?

It's the question on the minds of prominent bookeristas, who weigh in:

YES: Rep. Allen West: "Herman, It's Time To Move On"

From Politico, about the conservative Republican Congressman's views on the matter: "Florida Rep. Allen West is the latest conservative to call on Herman Cain to move out of the 2012 spotlight, calling him a 'distracter' and said he needs to 'move on'. 'I think that really beyond reassessing his campaign, he probably needs to understand that he is a distracter for what's going on right now, and we should move on,' West told the WMAL Morning Majority radio show. 'That would be my advice to him if I had the opportunity and he asked me.'"

NO: Frances Rice: "Herman, America Needs You"

Asserts the conservative head of the National Black Republican Association: "America needs Cain to stay in the presidential race and not buckle under the weight of the liberal smear machine. By the same token, Cain needs America to look at the facts and not condemn him based on unproven allegations. When the Obama media realized their attempts to derail Cain's campaign with false charges of sexual harassment were not working, they were quick to give airtime to a clearly troubled woman, Ginger White, who presented zero evidence to support her allegations of an affair with Cain."

Ms. Rice continues her commentary: "While appearing on television, Ms. White admitted that Cain helped her out financially with no exchange of 'sexual favors.' Then came the telling moment when Ms. White brazenly stated that she does not share Cain's political 'views.' It does not take a rocket scientist to discern that Ms. White, a black woman, is a Democrat. Without a doubt, if Ms. White had been a Republican woman making such an outlandish charge against a Democrat politician, her allegation would not have seen the light of day."

Mr. Grey Ghost: "The Gay Mafia Forces T.I. To Back Off His 'Gay People Are Too Sensitive' Comment"

T.I.
The conservative Democratic blogger in New York writes: "After this happened you just knew this was coming. As the sick, perverted, rich and mostly white gay mafia continue to take over the world with their immoral, pro-gay agenda, those who dare to speak out against their morally bankrupt ways will be shot down. As comedian Tracy Morgan, 'Millionaire Matchmaker' host Patti Stranger and now rapper T.I. have recently found out, dare to speak out against teh gheys (even if it's constructive criticism) and you will be dealt with....severely:

He continues his commentary: "Now of course, T.I.'s a rapper -- an easy target for the bullies on the Left who love to compare the personal choice of committing gay acts to being black. If T.I. were smart enough he'd know that the idea of comparing centuries of discrimination, Jim Crow laws, slavery and the like to who someone chooses to sleeps with is beyond ludicrous and more importantly disrespectful to all black people. But he isn't and that's why a rich, influential, gay white guy like Harvey Levin can get away with kind of utter disrespect and not worry about a single black liberal calling him out for it -- it's how the gay mafia works."

Allen West Considering Primary Bid Against Tom Rooney

Rep. West is eyeing another district
From the Miami Herald, about the conservative Republican Congressman: "It's tough getting elected as a Republican in the People's Republic of Broward County, one of the bluest stretches of Florida's political real estate. Still, US Rep. Allen West pulled it off in 2010, when he bested Rep. Ron Klein. But now it the Florida Senate's proposed map for Congressional seats indicate it could be even tougher for the tea-party favorite to win District 22. The proposed district is 4 percent more Democratic than it currently is. And that could be bad news for Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta. 'Allen's strongly considering making a move,' said a highly placed source affiliated with West's camp. 'It's not a big move, just a few miles away.'"

More: "All this talk is both premature and potentially too late. On one hand, the Legislature has yet to meet to sign off on the plans. And the Florida House hasn't even proposed its own version. But, sources in the Legislature tell us that the House is more inclined to adopt major portions of the Senate's Congressional map. So West needs to start making noise now, in part because legislators will have to decide whether to help him. Rooney has a key connection in the Legislature: uber-lobbyist and political fundraiser Brian Ballard, who has represented the gambling interests of the representative's family for years."

Cain: "They're Tryna Do A Character Assassination On Me"

Herman Cain
The conservative Republican businessman and presidential candidates goes victimologist on us, but doesn't specify who is "they". From ABC News: "Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, still reassessing his campaign in the wake of fresh sex charges, said today that he is a victim of  'character assassination.' Cain’s campaign was rocked Monday by Ginger White who claims she had a 13-year affair with Cain. Cain has denied the affair, but said he is reassessing his campaign. Asked by ABC News after a rally in a hotel ballroom outside of Cincinnati if he will drop out of the GOP race, Cain replied, 'We are reassessing.'"

The article continues: "Cain suggested White’s allegations have not hurt him. 'It’s been a groundswell of positive support,' but again added, 'We are still in reassessment phase.' Earlier in his speech to about 100 people in a crowded hotel ballroom, an energized Cain delivered a lively address that left the crowd laughing on many occasions. 'They’re attacking my character, my reputation and my name in order to try and bring me down, but you see I don’t believe that America is going to let that happen,' Cain said. 'I happen to believe that we the people are still in charge of this country."

1st Class To Graduate From Oprah's South African School

The school's opening ceremony
And all of them are headed for South African or American universities. From the Associated Press: "Mpumi Nobiva was raised by her grandmother in a neighborhood beset by poverty and crime after her mother died of AIDS. Now one of the first to graduate from Oprah Winfrey's school, she is headed to college in North Carolina. Winfrey spent $40 million to give her girls a campus with computer and science labs, a library and a wellness center. None paid tuition. The students are high-achievers, often from communities where schools are struggling to overcome the legacy of apartheid."

The article continues about the January graduation ceremonies: "And as the South African school year nears its end, all 72 members of the school's first graduating class have been accepted to universities in South Africa or the United States. More than a dozen have received full scholarships. Winfrey told her students that when you teach a girl, you teach a nation. 'The first class, my class, will prove that,' said Nobiva, 18, who will study visual and performing arts at [historically black] Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina."

More: "Winfrey will be at the school for graduation ceremonies in January, school officials said Wednesday as students gathered to reflect on their experiences over the last five years. The school that has drawn sometimes harsh attention because of the celebrity who founded it, and also because of early problems. Students have been accused of being spoiled. Allegations that a woman employed to care for the girls in their dormitory had instead abused teens were the subject of headlines around the world. The woman was acquitted last year. Earlier this year, a newborn born to a student at the school was found dead, again drawing international attention. 'Yes, we've had bad coverage,' Nobiva said. 'But it has certainly made us stronger.'"

SIDE-EYE POST OF THE DAY: Kidnapper Sues His Hostages For $235,000, After They Escape & The Cops Shoot Him

The litigious kidnapper
Ain't this some hot mess? From the Daily Mail (UK) (hat tip: Kenneth Durden): "A man who held a Kansas couple hostage in their home while fleeing from authorities is suing them, claiming they broke an oral contract made when he promised them money in exchange for hiding him from police. The couple has asked a judge to dismiss the suit."

The article continues: "Jesse Dimmick, of suburban Denver, is serving an 11-year sentence after bursting into Jared and Lindsay Rowley's Topeka-area home in September 2009. He was wanted for questioning in the beating death of a Colorado man and a chase had begun in Geary County, the Associated Press reports. Dimmick contends he told the couple he was being chased by someone, most likely the police, who wanted to kill him. In his hand-written court documents, Dimmick said: 'I, the defendant, asked the Rowleys to hide me because I feared for my life. I offered the Rowleys an unspecified amount of money which they agreed upon, therefore forging a legally binding oral contract.'"

More information about this ridiculous lawsuit: "He wants $235,000 in total, including $160,000 for his hospital bills after he was shot in the back by police and an additional $75,000 for emotional stress. Neighbours have said the couple fed Dimmick snacks and watched movies with him until he fell asleep and they were able to escape their home unharmed."

National Republican African American Caucus: "Herman Cain Should Stay In The Presidential Race"

Herman Cain
Asserts NRAAC: "In the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against GOP presidential contender Herman Cain, the National Republican African American Caucus [NRAAC] national chair, Dr. Jean Howard-Hill says short of a primary endorsement, the NRAAC stands with Mr. Cain and encourages him to remain in the race. Dr. Jean Howard-Hill, who also has taught American Government at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga points out, 'Politics is a hard ground where even if everyone else who is judging you is also with fault, once you enter the arena, attempts will be made to find everything possible to raise the issue of guilt. It is all about discrediting your opponent in an attempt to create an advantage.'"

More from NRAAC: "She says that although it is not meant to be about race, Mr. Cain also brings to this election and also to the Republican Party, hope that the party (at least at the grassroots level) is embracing the idea of people of color being supported for elected positions. 'We look out on the national scene and see so few to none of us. Seeing how the GOP has embraced Mr. Cain, as African American Republicans we can't help but be encouraged and inspired.'"

11/29 OLD-SCHOOL SONG OF THE DAY: Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, "Head To Toe" (1987)

Remember when the Full Force posse was in full effect? "Head To Toe" went #1 on both the U.S. Pop chart and the U.S. Black Singles chart (now called the R&B/Hip Hop chart). It was also a #1 hit in Canada. The song went Top 10 in New Zealand, and Top 20 in the Netherlands.

Kenneth Durden: "Conrad Murray's Sentence Shows The Backwardness Of California & Leftist Ideology "

Conrad Murray
Michael Jackson's doctor has been sentenced to four years in prison for his overdose death. Mr. Durden, a libertarian-conservative blogger, writes: "Conrad Murray, the man convicted of the negligent murder of Michael Jackson, will never go to prison, and will probably serve only a fraction of his time in county jail. Why? Well, two reasons: federal overreach and leftist policy bankrupting the state of California and LA County. First the federal government has meddled in the affairs of states to the point that states have difficulty maintaining the standards or keeping prisoners. No state is running a gulag, but the feds have determined that prisoners must have a certain level of comfort. By rule of the federal government, no state could even house state prisoners under the conditions our military service people live under overseas or on ships. Don't give me the 'they volunteered to serve' nonsense either. Criminals volunteered to surrender their freedom and comfort when they violated someone else's rights."

He continues his commentary: "The Murray case also shows how backward nature of the leftists who run California. How many gimme gimme programs are run by the state of California? That matters because the state is broke. When choices have to be made, it makes sense for the state to limit itself to basic functions. Those functions should be restricted to things that individuals and private entities cannot do. Since no individual or private organization can set up its own legal and penal system, the state must make sure it manages those functions. It's not that complicated to understand. We see the same insanity being played out at the federal level."

MP Sam Gyimah: "The Real Issue For Britain Is Our Long-Term Competitiveness Against Brazil, Russia, India & China"

Asserts the British conservative parliamentarian and former banker: "At present, 40 per cent of our exports go to Eurozone countries. But a decade of slow growth in Europe might change this, and it is the consumers and savers in some of those countries we have hitherto seen as developing that will be critical to our prosperity. Jim O'Neill, in his recent book The Growth Map, has noted that personal consumption in China has risen $1.5 trillion in the last decade, the equivalent of creating another UK within China's borders. Creating the environment for UK companies to export to these countries is imperative. And as I wrote yesterday, attracting cash-rich institutions like the China Investment Corporation to invest, and help build Britain's infrastructure for the future, is vital. Investor and businesses rely upon confidence, and that is what the Autumn Statement has achieved."

He continues his commentary: "To compete in the long term, Britain needs to be a place where entrepreneurs and the spirit of adventure can flourish. [It] cannot be done by the Government picking winners and supporting them, but relies on people with new ideas choosing to launch companies in the UK. Creating the right environment for entrepreneurs today will allow Britain to incubate the start-ups that will be the Google and Facebook of tomorrow. That is why I am pleased that the Treasury has looked at the raft of tax incentives that would encourage people to invest in innovative ideas. But tax is not enough and if there is one thing that has come out of the financial crisis, it is that banks do not always help. Supporting non-bank lenders through the Business Finance Partnership and looking at a the idea of a bond market, both of which I called for in the Beyond the Banks report co-authored with NESTA, should transform the finance landscape for these businesses."

Will Herman Cain Drop Out Of The Presidential Race? Yeah, Nothing Like A Redbone Jumpoff & Beckys Coming Out The Woodwork To Make A Brotha Reassess Thangs

Cain allegedly had a 13-year affair with Ginger White
Yeah, it's time for Herman Cain to pack it up. For my non-African American readers, this is what redbone, Becky, and jumpoff mean. From the Associated Press, about the conservative Republican businessman and presidential candidat's most recent woes: "Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain says that he needs to assess whether accusations that he had a 13-year extramarital affair will create too much of a cloud in the minds of potential supporters. Cain made the remarks Tuesday in a conference call with campaign workers after Ginger White accused him of having a long-running affair in a TV interview Monday night."

The article continues: "The National Review said it was on the conference call and transcribed Cain's remarks. Cain denied the affair. But he said the campaign needs to assess 'whether or not this is going to create too much of a cloud' in the minds of supporters going forward. Cain said the allegations have taken a toll on his wife and family."

Nigeria Senate Approves Anti-Gay Marriage Bill

This image will be illegal in Nigeria
From the Associated Press: "Nigeria's Senate voted Tuesday to criminalize gay marriage, gay advocacy groups and same-sex public displays of affection, the latest legislation targeting a minority already facing discrimination in Africa's most populous nation. The bill, now much more wide-ranging than its initial draft, must be passed by Nigeria's House of Representatives and signed by [center-right] President Goodluck Jonathan before becoming law. However, public opinion and lawmakers' calls Tuesday for even harsher penalties show the widespread support for the measure in the deeply religious nation. 'Such elements in society should be killed,' said Sen. Baba-Ahmed Yusuf Datti of the [center-left] opposition party Congress for Progressive Change, drawing some murmurs of support from the gallery."

Ted Sadler on Herman Cain

The moderate Democratic blogger in Georgia writes about the conservative Republican presidential candidate's troubles regarding an alleged extramarital affair and sexual harassment allegations: "Genesis 4:15 And Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.  And Jehovah appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him. Herman Cain shouldn’t feel the wrath of the GOP if this mess about him is true because they should have vetted him better and he served his purpose. In 1988, Senator Al Gore ran for president to increase awareness on global warming. Herman Cain’s chief reasons for entering the presidential race were to highlight problems with the arcane tax code and anti-business governmental policies. He did that."

Mr. Sadler continues his commentary about Mr. Cain: "If half of the allegations about Cain are true, Reverend Cain should reread Genesis 4:13 where Cain said to God 'my punishment is greater than I can bear.' Well, the original Cain should have thought about that before he killed his brother and Herman Cain should have thought about that before he stepped onto the presidential stage. Why do you think those other fellows chose not to run?"

When Your Dog Bites You In The Butt

Duane Brayboy comments on black liberal groups who criticize corporations, while taking money from them. The conservative blogger in Georgia writes: "Groups like the National Urban League, NAACP and Al Sharpton’s National Action Network are all on record for supporting the AT&T/T-Mobile deal. If you remember, I wrote about this 'interesting' relationship between these wireless companies and activist groups. Former head of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Jarrett Barrios was kicked off of his post with the organization after it was revealed that the organization received a payout donation from AT&T. In exchange of the donation, GLAAD publicly supported the merger. While GLAAD swiftly dealt with this news, there were no such reports of resignations within the NAACP, the National Urban League, or the National Action Network."

Mr. Brayboy continues his commentary: "Most of the above mentioned groups have been very vocal over what they deem as corporate greed (large companies that allegedly squeeze out the little guy). Yet here you had what could be one of the largest corporate mergers to date and these same activists readily co-signed on the deal. In fact, one of the main reasons given by the FCC for their refusal to green light this deal: IT’S TOO BIG!"

More: "This is a major, MAJOR story because it shows first hand how so-called activist groups are on the take by the same corporations they regularly put on blast. While this story gained a lot of traction in the online gay/lesbian community, the online Black community continues to demonstrate its lack of interest in stories that do not have an injustice bent. Stories about established companies that profited from slavery have in the past received a lot of attention. But stories about established Black activist organizations getting paid to sway public opinion in favor of the very thing they protest (blatant hypocrisy)? Naaaa! Let’s talk about the Soul Train Music Awards."

Mr. Grey Ghost: "The Syracuse University Sexual Molestation Allegations Demonstrate How Liberal Acceptance Of Homosexuality Is Destructive"

Asserts the conservative Democratic blogger in New York City: "So yet another episode of male coaches molesting young boys wrecks the sports world and the mainstream media remains complicit in their pro-gay agenda by refusing the address the underlying issues of homosexuality that are at the root of these scandals. Indeed, as tolerance of homosexuality grows, so does fear of being branded 'homophobic'. It's no secret that gay activists are a sensitive bunch (even to genuine criticism that comes from friend-to-the-gays like Patti Stranger). Thus one can't help but wonder if a reason why inappropriate relationships between grown men and young boys at bigtime institutions like Penn State and Syracuse can go unreported or unchallenged for so long is due to fear of being accused of homophobia? After all, in an age when the mainstream media is combining with schools to teach kids that 'there is nothing wrong with being gay', it would make sense for gay predators of children to feel more and more comfortable going about their despicable acts with more brazenment."

Georgia Woman Claims 13-Year Affair With Herman Cain

Things continue to go downhill for the conservative Republican businessman and presidential candidate. From My Fox Atlanta: "An Atlanta businesswoman is breaking her silence, claiming she has been involved in a 13-year-long affair with Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, FOX 5 senior I-Team reporter Dale Russell sat down with Ginger White, who had a story to tell. 'I'm not proud,' White told Russell. 'I didn't want to come out with this. I did not.' White was worried a political tsunami was headed her way. So, she decided to head it off, by confessing she was involved in a 13-year-long affair with presidential hopeful Herman Cain. 'It was pretty simple,' White said. 'It wasn't complicated. I was aware that he was married. And I was also aware I was involved in a very inappropriate situation, relationship.'"

Ms. White claims that she met Mr. Cain back in the late 1990s, while he headed up the National Restaurant Association: "She says during the next 13 years, he would fly her to cities where he was speaking and he lavished her with gifts. She says they often stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead and dined at The Four Seasons restaurant. She says he never harassed her, never treated her poorly, and was the same man you see on the campaign trail. 'Very much the same, very much confident, very much sure of himself,' White said, describing Cain. 'Very arrogant in a playful sometimes way. Very, ah -- Herman Cain loves Herman Cain.'"

JOHN HOPE BRYANT OP-ED: Why Financial Dignity Is The New Movement For Financial Literacy

The centrist founder of Operation HOPE, a Los Angeles-based financial literacy organization opines: "Financial dignity focuses on a child's strengths, not their weaknesses, and brings to life their aspirations, their hopes, and their goals - all which will drive greater academic achievement. Our Gallup-HOPE Index is the first step in the direction towards helping Secretary Duncan to actually 'measure it.' Financial literacy is a tool in route to the higher calling of financial dignity. It is the vehicle, not the goal. Financial dignity is closer to what I call the 'universal language of money' that the whole world actually speaks. It is closer to the emotional 'spark' that set in motion the historic civil rights movement of the 1960's in America. A movement that spread to every part of the world where democracy took hold, and the individual right to vote was the empowerment tool. Financial dignity is the warmth missing from the magic of financial literacy, and the missing link to make it all go click."

Mr. Bryant continues his commentary about financial dignity: "We have treated financial literacy as a left brain (quantitative and logic-based) issue, and teach it in a left-brain-to-left-brain manner. And then we wonder why it is not working. Approaching it in this way simply measures a child's weaknesses, rather than amplifying their strengths. Aspirations are a natural strength for every human being on the planet, and they are different for every person - but the same. At Operation HOPE we now believe that the solution is financial dignity, which will then inspire and inform our left-brain, logic-based quest for the knowledge to act on our (right-brain, aspirational) dreams. The answer is right brain to left, not the other way around. The key to a financially literate nation, and a growing movement around the world, is a focus on the financial dignity of each and every individual. The new civil rights movement is reaching, teaching and empowering every person with financial dignity, using the powerful tools of financial literacy first."

Uganda: Police Block Lukyamuzi Power Blackout Protest

The Conservative Party leader and parliamentarian is in hot water with the cops over a protest over rampant power outages that is planned for today. From the Daily Monitor (Uganda): "The police have written to Rubaga South MP John Ken Lukyamuzi halting a peaceful demonstration the lawmaker is organising against the current power blackouts that have engulfed the country. In a November 26 letter this newspaper has seen, Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Kaweesi said Mr Lukyamuzi’s planned protest would cause violence and chaos in the city. 'Whereas it is your constitutional right to hold a demonstration, which by all means must be peaceful,' wrote Mr Kaweesi, 'the subject matter of planned demonstration is to oppose which connotes a protest and ultimately could lead to breach of peace and general orderliness in the city.'"

More about MP Lukyamuzi's conflict with the police: "A day after receiving the letter, Mr Lukyamuzi wrote back to the police stating he would defy the directive and proceed with his planned demonstration which is scheduled to start this morning. The stage is set for a showdown. Citing Article 29 of the Constitution on freedoms, Mr Lukyamuzi wrote that he had played his part in giving the police due notice for his peaceful demonstration and insisted the Force had no right to stop him. 'Police does not have the locus standi to determine the merits of the planned demo. Whether my opposition to the ongoing load-shedding connotes a protest element is none of your business as police,' wrote the MP in a November 27 letter. 'The Constitution demands that you act without partisan inclinations,' Mr Lukyamuzi added."

Herman Cain: "I'm Not Falling From Contention"

Herman Cain
Asserts the conservative Republican businessman and presidential candidate. From the St. Petersburg Times (Florida): "Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain acknowledged his month-long slide in the polls during a stop here on Sunday night, but disputed the idea that he is falling out of contention. 'Well, I've faded from first to third, and that's not exactly fading all the way down to the bottom,' Cain told reporters just before speaking to about 350 people at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium."

The article continues: "Cain said most polls still show he is among the top three candidates and that most of his support is sticking with him through the 'disinformation and misinformation' that he says is being spread about him. 'What that says is that people who get on the Cain Train, they don't get off,' said Cain, a former pizza chain chief executive and the only one of the top eight presidential contenders never to hold elected office."

More from the article, about Mr. Cain's presidential bid: "With just five weeks until Iowa holds the nation's first caucus elections for president, Cain finds himself a distant third to former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in most polls. Cain told the Sarasota audience that Florida is largely responsible for his initial climb in the polls. Cain said it was his surprise straw poll victory in Orlando at the Republican Party of Florida's Presidency 5 event in September that shot him from also-ran to contender."

JUSTICE MALALA OP-ED: South Africa's Shameful Law

The South African center-right commentator argues that the African National Congress' state secrecy legislation belongs to the apartheid era: "The new South Africa is not comparable to the evils of old. But on November 22, when parliament passed a state secrecy law, we were shamed. The ANC became like its apartheid predecessors. The party of Mandela ignored the man himself and muzzled whistleblowers, journalists and its own citizens. It defied its trade union allies and civil society, and used its majority to ram through the protection of information bill, which gives the state power to classify information and criminalise anyone who comes into possession of such classified information. Brummer and their sources face up to 25 years' imprisonment."

Mr. Malala continues his commentary about the proposed legislation: "The bill also seals off state security agencies from any kind of scrutiny or accountability to the public — meaning that any investigation that, for example, mirrors the work done by American journalists to expose Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal would be criminal. Crucially, the bill has no public interest defence. After the legislation was passed, members of the South Africa National Editors Forum — all dressed in black — left parliament. ANC MPs jeered and shouted: 'Bye, bye.'"

He ain't done yet: "But for those of us who have watched the passage of this bill with growing horror, the battle is not over. The bill goes before the second house of parliament and, if passed, to the president for signature. We are hoping that Zuma will throw it back. Should he sign it into law then a constitutional challenge awaits. For now, though, we feel betrayed by a party that once made media freedom one of its pillars. The ANC, riven by internal battles, is beginning to take the country down with it. It has lost its way. It has blinded itself. For us, it is time for a new, long and hard struggle."

11/27 SONG OF THE DAY: Johnny Gill, "In The Mood"

This is the first single off his latest CD, Still Winning. Released last month, Still Winning is the baritone singer's first CD in 15 years. "In The Mood" has hit #33 on the U.S. R&B chart, marking Mr. Gill's 19th Top 40 R&B hit (which excludes the group hits that he had with New Edition and LSG).

Walaa Idris: "Time To Stop Crying & Start Fighting!"

The Conservative Party activist in London has a message for her fellow Brits about economic troubles: "Reading newspapers and media headlines you’ll be forgiven to feel this is it. This is the end of everything as we know it. They are full of doom and gloom, leave no hope, offer no way-out, in captions after caption we are made to feel this is it, it’s all over!! Really!! You mean to tell me our current economic crisis is worse than the 20th Century Depression, WWI and WWII – worse than the Black Death and all the other wars man raged on his fellow man throughout history. If this economic downturn is going to finish us off, what does it say about us, our tenacity and our self-worth?"

She continues: "Times are hard, actually they are very hard, I feel and see it around me daily, and I happen to live in an affluent part of the capital. So I can imagine how hard it must be in less well-off parts of the country. I’m neither blinkered nor naïve and do know there are those who even before the economic downturn, life for them is an ongoing daily struggle. There are those who find making ends meet a continuing challenge and with the current high inflation and shrinking incomes meeting daily expenses is impossible for many. But we cannot be defeatist and give in, we cannot accept its over and surrender – we must draw from whatever gives us hope, strength and resolve to pull together and carry on to ride this tide and come away victorious, because we can and we are worth it."

For my American readers, how is your Thanksgiving going so far?

11/23 OLD-SCHOOL SONG OF THE DAY: Jimi Hendrix, "Voodoo Child" (1968)

Today, I'm going really old-school. So old-school that it's a couple of years before I.was even born. However, Rolling Stone magazine has just named Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist of all time. Of course, I gotta highlight the American black rocker:

From Rolling Stone: "In a new list revealed on Wednesday, Hendrix topped a field of legendary axe-wielders, retaining the title he earned from the magazine in 2003. The Woodstock headliner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performed in a number of bands, including the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and pioneered the use of feedback and distortion. That revolution is one of many things that Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello highlights in his short writeup for Hendrix in the magazine. 'He seamlessly weaves chords and single-note runs together and uses chord voicings that don't appear in any music book. His riffs were a pre-metal funk bulldozer, and his lead lines were an electric LSD trip down to the crossroads, where he pimp-slapped the devil,' Morello writes."

WALTER E. WILLIAMS COMMENTARY: Should The Rich Be Condemned? No

The libertarian economics professor writes: "Class warfare thrives on ignorance about the sources of income. Listening to some of the talk about income differences, one would think that there's a pile of money meant to be shared equally among Americans. Rich people got to the pile first and greedily took an unfair share. Justice requires that they 'give back.' Or, some people talk about unequal income distribution as if there were a dealer of dollars. The reason some people have millions or billions of dollars while others have very few is the dollar dealer is a racist, sexist, a multinationalist or just plain mean. Economic justice requires a re-dealing of the dollars, income redistribution or spreading the wealth, where the ill-gotten gains of the few are returned to their rightful owners."

He continues his commentary: "In a free society, for the most part, people with high incomes have demonstrated extraordinary ability to produce valuable services for -- and therefore please -- their fellow man. People voluntarily took money out of their pockets to purchase the products of Gates, Pfizer or IBM. High incomes reflect the democracy of the marketplace. The reason Gates is very wealthy is millions upon millions of people voluntarily reached into their pockets and handed over $300 or $400 for a Microsoft product. Those who think he has too much money are really registering disagreement with decisions made by millions of their fellow men."

Professor Williams ain't done yet talking about rich folks & capitalism: "Stubborn ignorance sees capitalism as benefiting only the rich, but the evidence refutes that. The rich have always been able to afford entertainment; it was the development and marketing of radio and television that made entertainment accessible to the common man. The rich have never had the drudgery of washing and ironing clothing, beating out carpets or waxing floors. The mass production of washing machines, wash-and-wear clothing, vacuum cleaners and no-wax floors spared the common man this drudgery. At one time, only the rich could afford automobiles, telephones and computers. Now all but a small percentage of Americans enjoy these goods. The prospects are dim for a society that makes mascots out of the unproductive and condemns the productive."

THE "DON'T START NONE, WON'T BE NONE" POST OF THE DAY: 11-Year-Old Boy Defends Mom With BB Gun

Hat tip to Christopher Harris for this Bellingham, WA story:

Dennis Grace on Declining Investment In Uganda

The Ugandan center-rightist responds to a Ugandan news report stating that the country's 31% decline in investment is due to the global economic meltdown. He writes on his Facebook page: "The 31 percent decline in local and foreign investment within three months is not a result of global economic meltdown; it is consequence of bad economic management and the increasing political and financial risks to investors. With inflation at 31 percent, interest rate at over 30 percent, a thieving country you cannot trust with your money (Bad Black [socialite Shanita Namuyimbwa]; et al.), and increasing political demonstrations, do you think anyone would take that risk? Of course not. So tell the truth and shame the devil. We too know some elementary macro and micro economics!!!"

Will The Digital Revolution Free Africa?

Asks James Shikwati, the libertarian head of the Inter-Region Economic Network (Kenya): "The tension generated by the ongoing Digital Revolution between individual Africans and the traditional 'gatekeepers' such as political elites, media, Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) and 'experts' on African affairs offers hope to the continent. Political elites watch in dismay as their citizen transform into 'Netizens' free from the controls of space sovereigns. The media which for a long time has 'sanitized' and kept the status quo in place (be it at national or international level) is awed at the rate information crawls out on outlets such as short text messaging (SMS), Twitter, Facebook, Ushahidi, and Wikileaks. NGOs role as citadels of the suffering has been taken up by corporate bodies utilizing data to drive up sales as they engage in corporate social responsibility initiatives."

He continues his commentary: "On the political front, digitized information has driven masses onto the streets and yanked presidents from their thrones in North Africa at a speed never countenanced before. On the economic front; over half a billion Africans have been connected to the global system through cell phones and internet. Mobile telephony has increased access to banking services that was initially a preserve of few urbanized populations. Kenya for example, boasts of 14 million M-PESA mobile phone banking users. Distance learning has been made efficient away from postal mail (snail mail) correspondence. The world of the arts (music and film production) has gained through low budget movie productions as exhibited by the surge in 'Nollywood' (Nigerian movies)."

More: "Judiciously used as a tool, Digital Revolution will free Africa; the late Maruge Kimani Ng'ang'a from Kenya offers a vital lesson. He stunned the World when he joined lower primary school aged 87 years old as a student. The motivation behind his quest to study was driven by the burning desire to read the bible on his own. It is his personal drive to kick out the 'gatekeepers' and read the bible himself that turned him into a celebrity. The Digital Revolution has no intrinsic and autonomous power to free the African people. Rather, it is the African people who must urgently and proactively use it as a strategic tool to free themselves socially, economically and politically."

Chicagoland: America's 51st State?

That's what an Illinois Republican legislature wants for Booker Rising's hometown area. From Yahoo! News: "A state Republican legislator has introduced a bill to the Illinois General Assembly to separate the Chicago's county from the state -- effectively making the midwestern city the 51st state in the union."

Why this move? "The bill, filed by State Rep. Bill Mitchell of Decatur Tuesday, would 'enact legislation dividing Illinois and Cook County into separate states' because county residents 'hold different and firmly seated views' on 'politics, society, and economics' from people in the rest of the state. The bill's supporters point to higher tax rates and strict gun laws in the Chicago area and contend that the northern county is out of step with its Illinois neighbors. 'These liberal policies are an insult to the traditional values of downstate families,' Mitchell told the Decatur Tribune. 'When I talk to constituents, one of the biggest things I hear is 'Chicago should be its own state....Our voters' voices were drowned out by Chicago.'"

More about the proposal: "The measure would put the issue up to a vote by state residents through a referendum and then would require approval from the United States Congress and the president. As of this writing, the bill has just one other co-sponsor."

Booker Rising response: So President Barack Obama, who is a Chicagoan, is gonna sign off on this? What percentage of Illinois's revenue does Chicagoland bring to the table? Bwahahahaha. Ain't ever gonna happen. Dude is just seeking publicity.

Walmart Nail Salon Fight: Another Entitlement Meltdown

Kenneth Durden, a libertarian-conservative blogger, writes: "Check out this video (below) of another shameful entitlement meltdown that occurred at an Atlanta area Walmart. This all started when an adult woman, a mother (meant only in the lowest sense), got upset about the salon's prices. It was enough to start a fight that sent one teen to the hospital. I guess this woman felt entitled to lower prices. If the salon was not going to accommodate her, then she was going to raise hell. Occupy Walmart! Entitlement run amock [sic]."

He continues his commentary: "This is also a sample of ghetto culture. Ghetto culture is a disease that should be eradicated, but it won't be totally. Why not? Because you cannot fix stupid. Ignorance is curable, with information. Stupid, like ghetto, is a choice. That might sound harsh, but it is a lot less harsh than the way my great grandmother would have said it. Heck, it's a lot tamer than what my dad has said, though he's mellowed out a little."

Samuel Gonzalez: "Counting Out Bachmann Is A Mistake"

Rep. Michele Bachmann
Asserts the conservative Republican blogger in New York City: "Although recent polls have Minnesota congressman Michele Bachmann back in the second tier of candidates, I think she may end up getting a real second look by the voters.""

More: "Bachmann is a strong conservative and in last night’s debate she handled herself quick well on foreign policy. She was the equal of anybody onstage. But, consider this. The last thing the media wants is a very viable woman candidate running as the GOP nominee."

Nigeria: Jonathan Sacks Head Of Anti-Corruption Agency

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan
From Reuters, about Nigeria's center-right president: "Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has sacked the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a spokesperson said on Wednesday, giving no reason."

The article continues: "The EFCC, law enforcement agency with powers of arrest that investigates crimes such as fraud, money laundering and corruption, was set up by in 2003, partly in response to international pressure to tackle endemic graft. But human rights groups and diplomats have criticised it for failing to bring any senior politicians to justice, despite a string of high profile arrests. Jonathan has been criticised along with his predecessors for doing too little to tackle endemic corruption in Africa's most populous nation. Graft is the number one gripe of most Nigerians and foreign investors say it is their main reason for steering clear of Africa's second biggest economy."

11/22 OLD-SCHOOL SONG OF THE DAY: Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, "The Message" (1982)

A hip hop classic finally joins the Grammy Hall of Fame. From AllHipHop.com (hat tip: theGrio.com): "Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s classic single 'The Message' will be the first Hip-Hop recording to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. 'The Message' is one of 25 records selected by the Recording Academy’s strict governing body, which reviewed each record for its cultural impact and historical significance. Additionally, to even be considered, the record in question must be at least 25 years old."

A well-deserved honor for this groundbreaking song....

Obama’s Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah Black Agenda

Obama: "I got a black agenda?!"
Crystal Wright, a conservative Republican blogger in D.C., opines: "I bet you didn’t know President Obama had a Black agenda. Apparently, he does. After three years of ignoring his largest voter base, the White House held an African-American Policy Conference  November 9th. The White House also issued a report, in case you haven’t been paying attention, 'outlining how the President’s policies directly impact the African American community.' Reading this report you would think blacks are living Zip-a-dee-do-dah days  under the Obama administration."

She continues her commentary: "This will come as a surprise to the Congressional Black Caucus and the 16% of black Americans who are jobless and on a downward economic spiral. Obama is loath to refer to himself as black much less give audience to a black agenda. (He’s worried it may scare off other voters.) Let’s not forget it took the CBC more than a year to get a second meeting with Obama even though over 95% of blacks voted for him in 2008."

More: "If Obama really had a black agenda from day one [as the White House press release claims], why are blacks disproportionately harmed by the recession? And why has the income gap between blacks and whites grown even wider? Obama has never had a black agenda and his report 'The President’s Agenda and the African American Community' is nothing more than brazen pandering to 95% of black voters whom he neglects the other 364 days of the year. Overall, the report highlights how initiatives like increasing Pell Grant funding, Obamacare, foreclosure prevention programs like HAMP (which have helped few), and his ill fated American Jobs Act 'have made a significant impact in the African American Communities.' With the exception of funding to historically black colleges and universities, all these programs are targeted to all Americans not blacks specifically."

British Funding Of Political Parties: Bookerista Reaction

An "independent inquiry" has recommended that British political parties should get an extra £23m [US$35.9 million] of taxpayers' money in order to reduce reliance on "big money" donations. Of course, our friends across the pond have something to say on the topic:

James Cleverly: "No, No, No, No, No!"

The London city councilman and Conservative Party member writes: "There are lots of simple things that could be done to improve the funding of political parties. But a politics tax isn't one of them. A cap on donations from a person, company or organisation would be a good start, the Conservatives have in the past been too reliant on a small number of donors, and this makes us inward rather than outward looking. The Labour [P]arty is now almost totally funded by the unions who excerpt [sic] an inappropriate level of influence over it. And the Lib Dems have had their own troubles."

He adds: "It would be better if political parties genuinely looked to have a broad base of financial support. Modern digital media makes it easier to get small donations from ten or even hundreds of thousands of people and doing so would force all parties to listen to their own grass roots. State funding of political parties would be hugely unpopular and morally wrong."

Walaa Idris: "This Is A Very Bad Idea!"

The Conservative Party activist in London writes: "Funding of political parties should always be the responsibility of the parties. They should strive to broaden their appeal and continuously work towards ways to stay relevant to increase and renew their memberships. By relying on state funding they lose that edge and can become complacent. In an effort to remove big money from party gifts, the report suggested a cap on the upper limit. However, there is nothing in the report on trade unions’ funding or their strong hold [sic] on the left. Why is that!?"

Herman Cain: "Obama & His Democratic Comrades Are Failing Americans On The Debt Deal"

Herman Cain
Asserts the conservative Republican businessman and presidential candidate. From The Hill: "White House hopeful Herman Cain blasted President Obama and his 'comrades' for pointing the finger at Republicans in the apparent failure of the debt supercommittee to find $1.2 trillion in spending cuts, meaning automatic cuts to defense and domestic spending will likely be triggered in 2013. 'President Obama and his ultraliberal, anti-job creating comrades in the Democrat Party are apoplectic because Republicans are standing strong with the American people, refusing to hike their taxes during Obama’s Great Recession,' Cain said in a statement."

The article continues: "Cain went on to blame Obama for 'providing no leadership' and 'failing Americans' as Congress negotiated potential debt-saving measures. 'We must immediately cut spending — for real, not the Obama way — and dismantle the barriers to growth,' Cain said."

SIDE-EYE POST OF THE DAY: The Roots Welcome Bachmann With 'Lyin' Ass B___h' On Jimmy Fallon's Show

I like The Roots' music, but the liberal rap band get the side-eye from me for this sexist, unprofessional behavior last night. From the Associated Press: "As Bachmann strode on to the stage at Fallon's 'Late Night,' the show's band played a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song called 'Lyin' A** B*tch.'"

The article continues: "The song begins with a distinctive 'la la la la la la la la la' refrain -- the only words audible before Bachmann, smiling and waving to the audience, sat down. The song itself, about a relationship gone wrong, isn't political. Among its cleanest lyrics: 'She always says she needs you, but you know she really don't care.'"

Of course, conservatives cried foul about this hot mess. Jimmy Fallon has now apologized for his house band's low-class behavior.

JESSE LEE PETERSON COMMENTARY: An Evil Assault On A Good Man

The conservative Republican activist zeroes in on liberal attacks against Herman Cain: "I interviewed Cain on my radio show earlier this year, and I also had the opportunity to spend some time with him at a private luncheon near Los Angeles. My impression is that he's a very personable, smart and decent man. Thus far, Cain's accusers have not offered real proof to back up their charges [of sexual harassment while Cain headed up the National Restaurant Association back in the day]. No photos, letters, emails, or witnesses."

More: "The left knows that Obama's domestic policy has been a disaster. He's failed to turn the economy around and create jobs. His plan for re-election is to promote class warfare (Occupy Wall Street) and use race as a wedge issue to further divide this nation. In 2012, the race card will be used like never before to attack and intimidate the GOP candidates. Cain is a threat because he's a black conservative and a self-made businessman. The Democrats and the liberal media don't want an Obama vs. Cain debate because Cain is not afraid of the race issue. And he annihilates the left's narrative that black Americans need big government programs and benefits to succeed. Cain is one of the first national leaders to publicly state that the pervasiveness of Planned Parenthood abortion clinics in black neighborhoods is tantamount to 'planned genocide.' He told CNSNews.com that Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, wanted to prevent 'black babies from being born.' I believe that this is one of the reasons attorney Gloria Allred, a staunch feminist and Democratic donor, is involved in this witch-hunt."

He ain't done yet: "This is not so much a political battle as much as a spiritual one. Cain, like other good men before him, is hated because of who he is. The world hates good, strong Christian men. I've not endorsed anyone for president, but I do admire Herman Cain, and believe him to be a credible man of character. My desire is that the American people see through the lies and recognize this attack for what it is: an evil, politically motivated high-tech lynching to derail Cain's chance of being president and affecting the world for good."

Artur Davis: "Racial Redistricting Hurts Voters"

Yes, the moderate Democrat and former Congressman is dissing that which once helped get him elected in Alabama. From The Daily Caller (see video here): "The artificial creation of legislative districts with a majority of minorities (majority minority districts) is counterproductive and distorts normal politics, says a former beneficiary of such districts, retired Democratic Rep. Artur Davis. 'Like many generally good ideas in politics, it has been pushed to its limit and now it creates perverse consequences.....It has made race even more important in southern politics, and that’s not a good thing,' he told The Daily Caller during an exclusive interview in Washington, D.C."

The article continues: "Obama’s appointees in the Department of Justice sue to protect and expand these majority-minority districts, and are now pressuring Texas to create an additional majority Hispanic district. Other activists are pushing to create a Muslim-majority district in Michigan. Many right-of-center intellectuals and activists deplore the racially-drawn majority minority districts, saying they encourage color conscious voting, divide whites from blacks and violate constitutional curbs on racial segregation. These critics include Roger Clegg of the Center for Equal Opportunity, and Hans von Spakovsky of the Heritage Foundation. But many Republican strategists quietly welcome the districts, because they corral Democratic voters into a few areas and give Republicans working majorities in more districts and in the state-wide races."

Kiron Skinner Joins Newt Gingrich's Foreign Policy Team

The conservative scholar is helping the conservative Republican and former House Speaker with his presidential bid. From Foreign Policy: "Kiron Skinner is the W. Glenn Campbell Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution, where she is a member of the Shultz-Stephenson Task Force on Energy Policy. She also is an associate professor of international relations and politics at Carnegie Mellon University and director of the university's Center for International Relations and Politics. Her government service includes membership on the US Defense Department's Defense Policy Board as an adviser on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (2001-7); the Chief of Naval Operations' (CNO) Executive Panel (2004-present); the National Academies Committee on Behavioral and Social Science Research to Improve Intelligence Analysis for National Security (2009-11); and the National Security Education Board (2004-11)."

IFP: "The ANC Seeks To Erase Buthelezi From History"

The center-right, Zulu-nationalist party in South Africa is crying foul about recent ANC actions. From Politicsweb (South Africa): "Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is seriously concerned with the ongoing plans by the African National Congress to eradicate Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi's legacy from history. 'It is obvious that the ruling Party (ANC) is not ready to work together and form a respectable relationship with IFP. ANC is constantly finding ways to cause conflict between itself and IFP,' said Leader of the Official Opposition in KwaZulu Natal, honourable Blessed Gwala."

The article continues: "Gwala says this after the ruling party has announced that it has set aside money to rename uMvoti Municipality's Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Street whilst other road names will not be changed. 'This is not the first move of the ANC's mission to oust Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, if we could recall that this comes after the ruling party succeeded in renaming Mangosuthu Highway to Griffiths Mxenge. How long will this go on, where we find ANC deliberately disrespecting and causing further conflict with IFP. The ruling party should stop wasting money on unnecessary street renaming and focus on service delivery,' said Honorable Gwala."

Horace Cooper: "Drug Testing Welfare Recipients Is Constitutional, As Well As Sound Public Policy"

Asserts the conservative and former constitutional law professor: "Contrary to a federal court ruling, the Constitution does not prohibit states from testing welfare recipients for drug use, says a new paper by former constitutional law professor Horace Cooper for the National Center for Public Policy Research. Cooper also argues that drug testing of welfare recipients is a sound public policy and beneficial to children."

The NCPPR press release continues: "The paper, 'Drug Testing of Welfare Recipients is Sound, Sensible and Constitutional,' says U.S. Federal District Judge Mary Scriven's temporary injunction blocking the implementation of Florida's welfare drug testing law is 'predicated on an outdated idea that recipients have either an entitlement or other heightened legal claim on the benefits they receive from taxpayers. Yet the Supreme Court and the nation have been headed in the opposite direction.'"

More about drug testing laws for welfare recipients: "The Florida law, which requires drug tests by applicants for Florida's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Benefits program, was challenged in court by the ACLU. The Constitutional question has national ramifications, as several dozen states reportedly are considering limiting the receipt of taxpayer-funded benefits to those who can pass a drug test. 'Thanks to the ACLU and Judge Scriven,' says Cooper, 'since Florida was the first state to get its program up and running, every other state that faces a court challenge will likely have to overcome the unnecessary hurdle that Judge Scriven's ruling created.' Cooper adds: 'Why should taxpayers cover anyone's drug use? It's beyond bizarre to imagine that there is a constitutional right to get welfare and be a drug abuser. It's not news that the ACLU opposes welfare drug testing. It's a blockbuster that it can get a federal judge to agree.'"

And more: "Cooper says Judge Scriven failed to consider the applicability of the landmark Supreme Court ruling involving welfare, Dandridge v. Williams, which increased the flexibility of states in designing welfare programs. He also says the 1996 welfare reform bill, signed into law by President Clinton, that abolished the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) welfare entitlement program gave states far broader flexibility to administer welfare while sharply curtailing the the courts' legal authority to review state standards. 'Judge Scriven's ruling,' Cooper says, 'seems not to have kept pace with the times.'"

Cain Signs Anti-Abortion Pledge

From CNN, about the conservative Republican businessman and presidential candidate: "One month after sparking a controversy over his stance against abortion rights, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain is signing a leading social conservative group's anti-abortion pledge. Tuesday the businessman and former Godfather's Pizza CEO and radio talk show host put his name to the Susan B. Anthony List's 'Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge.' 'This decision is consistent with the Herman Cain we have come to know,' Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA List, said in a statement. 'He understands the wound abortion is to America and especially to the most vulnerable among us.'"

More: "Cain stirred controversy last month in an interview on CNN's 'Piers Morgan Tonight.' He said he was against abortion rights, but when asked about rape or incest, Cain said the government shouldn't have a say on those issues and the decision should be left to the family. Some social conservatives slammed Cain for his remarks in the following days, prompting him to be much more vocal about his 'pro-life' positions during campaign stops and interviews over the weekend."

Condi Rice To 2012 GOP Field: "Beef Up On Foreign Policy"

From Politico, about the moderate-conservative Republican: "Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the Republican presidential candidates can - and must - learn about foreign policy basics while on the campaign trail. Asked in an interview aired Sunday on CNN's 'State of the Union' about the basic foreign policy gaffes that Republican presidential candidates Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann have made, Rice asserted that a potential president needed - at a minimum - to master the basics of foreign policy. 'I would say to the candidates, you don't have to know the ins and outs of foreign policy because nobody would expect that kind of exposure. But the basis of foreign policy, you can - you can master those during the campaign. And it's important for the American people to know that you care enough about these issues to do that,' Rice said."

More: "The former Bush Cabinet official noted that it was crucial for Republican presidential candidates to know the historical role America has played on the world stage. 'A potential president has to know the role of the United States of America and that it's an exceptional role, that we have, in fact, been willing to bear a lot of burdens over the last 60 plus years in order to promote a balance of power favor - that favors freedom,' she said."

West: "Gingrich Is Carrying 200 Pounds Of Political Baggage"

Newt Gingrich (pictured left) & Rep. West
From the liberal Huffington Post: "Gingrich isn’t well regarded among established Republican types, who are fully aware of his propensity for bombast and verbal and political gaffes. Nor does it seem like he would do well with the Tea Party crowd, which is skeptical of both long service in Washington and careers in influence peddling. Those, at least, were the criticisms Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), one of the Tea Party's more vocal elected members, had of Gingrich when he appeared on the Laura Ingraham radio show Tuesday."

Rep. West's comments about Mr. Gingrich: "'Well, he's a fighter, but he's also a fighter that's carrying a 200-pound rucksack on his back with all the baggage trying to fight,' West said. 'I think the problem with the Republican Party, Laura, and you've been around this more than I have, is that we continue to believe in leadership by entitlement. We don't come up with new faces, new visionary leaders. You look at everyone on this stage -- they've been in this game for quite some time.'"

Project 21 To Jesse Jackson: "The Occupy Wall Street Protesters Ain't Nothing Like The Civil Rights Movement"

From the black conservative group's news release, which was emailed to Booker Rising:

Members of the Project 21 black leadership network are criticizing Jesse Jackson for comparing increasingly violent Occupy Wall Street events to the civil rights movement. Project 21’s black conservatives say the Tea Party movement more closely resembles civil rights-era activism. “Some people don’t want to acknowledge this, but Tea Party members express their frustrations with the government and are working for change in the same manner as the civil rights movement fought for freedom,” said Project 21 spokeswoman Lisa Fritsch. “They protest in peace. They protest in civility. And they translate their protest into power — not by being violent, disrespectful and blocking peoples’ way or stepping on the little guy as the Occupy Wall Street protesters do.”

In an interview with Politico, Jesse Jackson embraced the Occupy effort, saying: “The mass appeal of economic justice [and] economic security is a critical civil rights issue of our time.” He added: “Dr. [Martin Luther] King planned to occupy the Mall in Washington, and planned to engage in civil disobedience to get… Washington to get their [sic] priorities straight.” Jackson has also made supportive visits to Occupy campsites in cities such as Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Georgia.

Project 21’s Alveda King, the niece of Dr. King, in an interview with the Fox News Channel challenged Jackson’s assertions, saying he should “revisit his 20th century history.” She added: “My uncle, the whole movement, was founded in prayer, in crying out to God in a peaceful movement. And this [new] movement is not peaceful.”

National Shopping Day! Ready?

Kenneth Durden, a libertarian-conservative blogger, writes about the shopping season: "Saturnalia madness is turning 'Turkey Day' into National Shopping Day. Now that nothing means anything anymore, I've gone with the term Turkey Day. A day for reflection and gratitude became a day all about turkey and football. Now, this day has degenerated into a day about the other most pagan, wanton and corrupt of 'holy' days - Xmas (aka Christmas). My preferred term is Saturnalia, but hey I'm a traditionalist."

He continues his commentary: "Xmas and the entire 'sleep outside or trample each other to buy stuff we don't need' bit continues to bug me. We have become an increasingly shallow society. The entire society is completely focused on self-gratification, being entertained and stimulated and is thus easily manipulated."

More: "I know I'm swimming upstream with this. But I'm a traditionalist/a conservative. If something is intended to be sacred (a holy day) should it not remain so? Is there never a time when we should look inward, toward something more meaningful? Okay, for the simple. This has nothing to do with liberty. Noted that I am not calling for government to force or proscribe any behavior. Each of us is free to be as simple as he wishes. My appeal is to the conscience. But I know talk like this turns off most people: 'Don't make me think.'  Those who feel this way are in no danger of thinking."

Carol M. Swain: "Damage Control Is Eating Up Herman Cain's Presidential Campaign"

From OneNewsNow.com: "A political analyst says the sexual harassment claims against Herman Cain and his botched answer to a question about Libya are forcing him to spend more time on damage control and less time dealing with what he would do to solve the nation's problems."

The article continues about the conservative political scientist's observations: "'They don't amount to much, but to some people, when they put them all together, it may result in a conclusion that he's certainly not ready for the top of the ticket,' suggests Dr. Carol Swain, professor of law and political science at Vanderbilt University. She also questions why Cain is not more prepared to discuss his views on important policy issues. 'Since Cain is the one running for president, that's more responsibility on him to make sure that he has an opinion on the top issues of our day,' Dr. Swain contends. 'And being asked about Libya is something that you would think that someone could anticipate or they would have already formed a position.'"

Pro-Life Democrats: "The Obama Administration Will Issue Final Religious Exemption For Obamacare"

From Democrats for Life of America: "The Obama Administration will announce shortly the final rule for the contraception mandate that was included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Pro-Life Democrats are expecting a religious exemption that is consistent with longstanding public policy and current law. 'The Obama administration is already unfairly under attack by Catholic conservatives who are using the proposed final rule to spread anti-Obama sentiment to lay Catholics,' said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats for Life. 'The Administration has no intention of forcing Catholic institutions to provide insurance coverage for services that are directly in opposition to their moral beliefs. It does not make any sense from a public policy perspective and it certainly is not smart politically to alienate Catholic voters.'"

More: "Current law does not mandate insurance coverage for contraceptives nor does it not require free birth control. Under the current law, employers, who oppose certain types of birth control for moral reasons, do not currently provide coverage, but they also do not block access to birth control for their employees. They simply do not pay for it because it is against their religious beliefs. The PPACA included a provision to mandate that insurance plans include free contraception coverage. The law also proposed to continue to allow those employers who oppose those types of birth control that cause abortions of new embryos, to continue to provide insurance to their employees, but would be exempt form providing contraception coverage. This was part of the agreement reached between pro-life Democrats and the Obama administration."

Condi Rice: "Assad Is Taking Syria To Brink Of Civil War"

From the Associated Press, about the moderate-conservative Republican: "Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Syrian President Bashar Assad is taking his country to the brink of civil war. Rice tells CNN's 'State of the Union' that Assad's crackdown is creating a very dangerous situation. She says Assad 'is no friend of the United States' and that his overthrow would be a 'great thing' for the Syrian people, U.S. interests and anyone seeking a more peaceful Middle East. Rice is calling for the 'toughest' possible penalties against Assad's government. She says that if Russia and China block U.N. sanctions, the U.S. should apply pressure with its allies or act alone. Rice also is urging more assistance to Syria's opposition."

Stanley Crouch: "Koch Brothers Live In A World Of Illusions"

Asserts the moderate-liberal columnist in New York City, about the libertarian-conservative billionaire funders of many center-right causes: "Rachel Maddow of MSNBC and others have mistaken 'pizza candidate' Herman Cain — whose burlesque routine of a GOP campaign is being indirectly underwritten by the Kochs — as 'a satirical candidacy,' but I believe things are much more serious than that. They have made Cain into 'a brother from another mother,' as he calls himself. Indeed, he is the vessel for their dangerous political and economic ideas. Those ideas include a continued reliance on oil — one of the big moneymakers for the behemoth Koch Industries, about which little is known. It also means that solar energy will continue to be vilified. Republicans are still making a big stink about the $535 million loan guarantee to failed California solar panel manufacturer Solyndra, and you can bet the oil-slick Koch brothers are loving every minute of this tempest in a teapot. And while the Republican contenders for their party’s presidential nomination knock President Obama for not being tough enough on Iran, it turns out that the Koch brothers were just fine doing business there — that is, until someone found out about it."

He continues: "So maybe the long con isn’t working so well for them, after all — not anymore, at least. Their greatest strength now is the shrieking wall of the lunatic fringe, and the total 'no' the Tea Party uses to replace the compromise central to the democratic process. The intention of backing them is to drown out any serious discussion of what is going on in America today. Their epic distractions include screaming about the rights of the unborn, demanding that federal agencies be abolished, railing against taxes and accusing Obama of being a Manchurian Candidate."

More: "But their noise is just part of the billionaire hustle, meant to keep the 1% isolated from the reach of reality. It seems quite obvious to me at this point that the epic number of imbecilic causes that Charles and David Koch have underwritten is essentially a brilliant set of distractions intended to keep their Wizard of Oz lives hidden behind a smoke screen of Republican frenzy. So follow the money with enough dedication and you will find yourself looking up at a huge power structure carrying the surname of Koch and intent on destroying whatever gets in the way of its ruthless profit-making machine. It is about that, and nothing else. Never swallow the long con. It is deeply toxic."
