Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2011

This is the third year of the Bookerista Of The Year awards. In our days of voting, a semi-finalist list of  the Top 5 nominees was then whittled down to three finalists by Booker Rising reader votes. The combined semi-finalist and finalist tally for the top three candidates: Herman Cain received 39% of the vote, Ron Miller 35% of the vote, and Rep. Allen West received 26%. Almost half of the people on the list are newcomers to the honor. Here are the individuals in the Top 25 Bookeristas of 2011:

2011 claim to fame: the 9-9-9 tax plan
Position on Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2010 list: *

The good, the bad, and the ugly described the controversial Mr. Cain's high-profile year in 2011. Within the span of a few months, Mr. Cain's campaign went from low-key to U.S. presidential frontrunner. In addition to Tea Party movement support, the former Godfather's Pizza CEO turned heads and made international headlines with his  9-9-9 plan. The Wall Street Journal writes: "It would scrap the current system — with its income-tax rates as high as 35% for high-income individuals and for corporations — and replace it with a 9% personal flat tax, a 9% corporate flat tax and a 9% national sales tax. He also put out a book called This Is Herman Cain, which discussed his background and outlined his policy positions. He suspended his campaign after sexual harassment allegations during his tenure as the National Restaurant Association's head and alleged longtime jumpoff Ginger White emerged.

2. Ron Miller, 52

The conservative Republican blogger is an associate dean and assistant professor with the Liberty University Helms School of Government. He is a conservative activist and commentator, and author of SELLOUT: Musings From Uncle Tom’s Porch. The nine-year plus veteran of the U.S. Air Force and married father of three writes columns for numerous online sites and print publications, and his own website, RonOnTheRight.com.

3. Allen West, 50
Congressman & conservative Republican | Plantation, Florida, USA

2011 claim to fame: one of two black Republicans who serve in the U.S. Congress; being a controversial quote machine

Position on Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2009 list: 1

Rep. Allen West was voted last year's Bookerista Of The Year. The firebrand politico and self-proclaimed "modern-day Harriet Tubman" leading blacks off the Democratic "plantation" has no shortage of liberal haters. Of course, his controversial quips only endears him to conservatives. What didn't Rep. West make a controversial comment about this year? If it wasn't about Muslims, it was gays in the military. The latest one involves comparing the Democrats to an infamous Nazi propagandist. However, you can count on the brotha speaking his mind. A former Army lieutenant colonel, Rep. West is also increasingly prominent in discussing military and foreign policy issues on Capitol Hill.

4. Dambisa Moyo, 42
Moderate-conservative economist | London, England

2011 claim to fame: discussing the West's economic decline and the rise of emerging markets

The Zambian-born economist put out another best-selling book, How The West Was Lost: Fifty Years Of Economy Folly And The Stark Choices Ahead. The book focused on emerging markets and structural problems in the U.S. economy. Dr. Moyo posts on Twitter (where she has 50,000 followers) and Facebook (where she has almost 20,000 fans).

5. Tim Scott, 46
Congressman & conservative Republican | Charleston, South Carolina, USA

2011 claim to fame: one of two black Republicans who serve in the U.S. Congress; went toe-to-toe with unions regarding Boeing's hiring rights

Position on Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2010 list: 3

The seemingly quieter one of Congress's two black Republicans, Rep. Scott's main focus is on business and tax issues affecting his district. You may recall his battle with the National Labor Relations Board regarding Boeing's decision to relocate from Seattle, Wash. to his Southern district. Rep. Scott has also been making strong moves to become a kingmaker in his state for the Republican presidential primary (since South Carolina's choice often becomes the GOP nominee).

6. Thomas Sowell, 81

2011 claim to fame: father of contemporary U.S. black conservatism

Dr. Sowell was the 2009 Bookerista Of The Year. For more than 30 years, he has been holding court as America's most influential black conservative voice. He is also one of USA's most prominent conservatives, across race. In his weekly column - which is in more than 150 newspapers in USA and Canada - Dr. Sowell opines about economics, politics, & social issues.

7. John Abraham Godson, 41
Moderate-conservative parliamentarian and Platforma Obywatelska member | Sejm | Łódź, Poland

2011 claim to fame: Poland's first black Member of Parliament
Position on Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2010 list: *

MP Godson joined the Sejm (Polish House of Representatives) in December 2010 and served his first full year as a parliamentarian in 2011. The Nigerian-born politico is a college professor and Pentecostal minister. MP Godson previously served as a city councilman in Łódź, which is Poland's third largest city. The parliamentarian is nicknamed "the Polish Obama" for his groundbreaking entry into Polish national politics. He has also gotten kudos in the Polish media and among the public for being one of the country's most efficient and constituent-oriented legislators.

8. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, 73
Moderate-conservative president | Republic of Liberia | Monrovia, Liberia

2011 claim to fame: first female in Africa to be re-elected as head of state, winning the Nobel Peace Prize

Position on Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2010 list: *

Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (whose Unity Party is labelled a "conservative capitalist-leaning" party by the Liberian media and is affiliated with the center-right International Democrat Union) became Africa's first female elected head of state in 2006. Late in 2011, she was re-elected. President Sirleaf was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, with compatriot Leymah Gbowee and Yemen's Tawakel Karman "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work."

9. Juan Williams, 57
Moderate-liberal commentator | Fox News Channel | USA

2011 claim to fame: center-left voice on Fox News Channel

The moderate-liberal commentator holds his ground as a Fox News contributor. He also contributes pieces to The Hill.

10. Sophia A. Nelson, 44
Moderate commentator | Ashburn, Virginia, USA

2011 claim to fame: promoting centrism, discussing portrayals of black women

Position on Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2010 list: 21

Ms. Nelson is known for her cable TV appearances and critiques of the Republican Party (her former political party) in relation to black voters. The German-born commentator also takes aim at the Democratic Party on fiscal matters. Her book Black Woman Redefined: Dispelling Myths And Discovering Fulfillment In The Age Of Michelle Obama won the African American Literary Award for Best Non-Fiction Book of 2011.

2011 claim to fame: promoting financial literacy as the next Civil Rights Movement, in USA and abroad

Mr. Bryant is the founder of Operation HOPE, an L.A.-based organization that helps poor individuals and families achieve increased stability and self-reliance. Possessing an entrepreneurial background where he developed a $25 million business, he also serves on the President's Council on Financial Literacy.

2011 claim to fame: keeping government officials accountable to citizens

In his weekly "Monday Morning Matters" column, Mr. Malala — who is one of South Africa's most respected political analysts — focuses on improving South Africa. Whether it's focusing on government malfeasance and out-of-control government spending, advocating for capitalism against efforts to nationalize South African industries, chastising Marxist politicians who claim to be "for the people" while living like royalty off the taxpayers, taking on the police for their "shoot to kill" policy, or opposing cultural practices that he believes are outdated, Mr. Malala is on the case.

14. Walter E. Williams, 75

She also led foreign trade missions to Europe and South Africa [which are big trade partners with the state of Florida], served as chairwoman of Space Florida and, she says, played a direct role in increasing federal defense contracts in the state. But it's what she hasn't done that has surprised many people."

19. John McWhorter, 46

2011 claim to fame: being contrarian on black political and social issues

The moderate-conservative commentator is a regular op-ed contributor to TheRoot.com and The New Republic, where he opines about a wide array of subjects impacting Black America. Dr. McWhorter is also a scholar at the Manhattan Institute. In 2011, he also authored What Language Is (And What It Isn't And What It Could Be).

20. Cory Booker, 42
Mayor & moderate-liberal Democrat | City of Newark | Newark, New Jersey, USA

2011 claim to fame: trying to turn around a troubled city

Mayor Booker is making changes in Newark, once considered one of America's worst cities. Mayor Booker takes a hands-on approach to tackling crime, even going out with regular citizen patrols and the police. He is also known for his regular use of social media to help spread the word about his policies, and for raising money for local charities.

21. Lindiwe Mazibuko, 31
Moderate-liberal parliamentary leader | Democratic Alliance | Durban metro, South Africa

2011 claim to fame:chief opposition to the ANC in South Africa's parliament

Position on Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2010 list: *

In October, the moderate-liberal Democratic Alliance elected Lindiwe Mazibuko as its Number 2 figure, more specifically to lead the party in parliament. The centrist party is going after black middle class voters in particular. There is also talk that the parliamentarian — who has previously served as the DA's spokesperson — may be the future successor to party leader Helen Zille.

22. Paul Kagame, 54
President and free-marketeer | Republic of Rwanda | Kigali, Rwanda

2011 claim to fame: trying to turn around a country with a troubled history

To say that President Kagame is controversial is an understatement. There are accusations that he is behind assassination hit squads that are taking out Rwandan dissidents around the globe, allegations of human rights violations, and protesters greet him when he travels abroad. On the other hand, the free-marketeer is turning heads globally in transforming his country's image from Genocide Central to East Africa's top destination to do business.

23. Killion Munyama, 50
Moderate-conservative parliamentarian and Platforma Obywatelska member | Sejm | Pila, Poland

2011 claim to fame: Poland's second black Member of Parliament
Position on Top 25 Bookeristas Of 2010 list: *

The Zambian-born politician's specialty is international finance (he has a PhD), and has worked with the European Union in the past. In addition to representing his rural district, one of MP Munyam's pet projects is to enhance economic ties between Europe and Africa.

24. Lurita Doan, 53

2011 claim to fame: criticizing the Obama administration's operation of federal agencies
