Uptown magazine has produced a list called "10 Black Celebrity Republicans". While most of the individuals on the black liberal magazine's list are dubiously called "Republican" (e.g., LL Cool J, 50 Cent and T.D. Jakes are highly dubious; James Earl Jones and Donnie McClurkin are unconfirmed), there are some bona fide Republicans on its list:
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, 40
Uptown magazine writes: "Handsome, gorgeous, oh-so-fine black and Samoan
(blamoan?) professional wrestler from Hayward, California. He’s also
very fine. And he’s an actor, if you consider films like Tooth Fairy and Be Cool quality cinema. He’s fine too."
Booker Rising response: In California, The Rock is a registered Republican (although he reportedly voted for Barack Obama in 2008). In 2000, he put in an appearance at the Republican National Convention (and also attended the Democratic National Convention) as part of WWE's efforts to promote civi engagement.
Don King, 81
Uptown magazine writes about his background: "An unkempt high-top fade in bad need of a shape up on two legs. Also, a
legendary boxing promoter long associated with greats like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and George Foreman."
Booker Rising response: Mr. King is a longtime registered Republican. He attended the Republican National Convention in 2004, and has organized fundraisers for Republican candidates.
Sheryl Underwood, 48
Uptown magazine writes: "Former stand-up comedienne most known for her performances on BET’s 'Comic View' and current co-host of daytime talk show 'The Talk.'
Booker Rising response: Ms. Underwood is an Army veteran. What does she says about her politics? "I would call myself a sexually progressive, God-fearing, black Republican."
Here's another quote by Ms. Underwood: "Blacks were originally Republicans. The black community has decided to
be myopic in their political point of view, and the problem with this is
that means our voice is not heard in every aspect of the political
process."
Jimmie Walker, 65
Uptown magazine writes: "An actor best known for his portrayal of James “JJ” Evans, Jr. on the sitcom “Good Times.”
Booker Rising response: A couple of months ago, Mr. Walker went on "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News to discuss his disappointment with U.S. President Barack Obama.
Former NBA star Karl Malone, country rapper Cowboy Troy, and actor Joseph C. Phillips are also bona fide black Republicans (who didn't make Uptown's list, for some reason).
