Cory Booker: "Julian Castro Will Be Texas's First Hispanic Governor. The Demographics Are On His Side"

From Politico, about the moderate-liberal Democratic mayor's prediction about the San Antonio mayor's future: "A Democrat has not won statewide office in Texas since 1994. Texas’s Hispanic population is rapidly growing, raising expectations that Democrats will soon see better fortunes on the ballot. 'The demographics are on your side,' Booker said. 'The work in Texas now is planting seeds for that state to go blue very, very soon,' Booker said, adding, 'Once the state shifts blue, it changes presidential politics forever.'"

More: "Their comments came as they spoke at an event hosted by the New York alumni board of Stanford University, their shared alma mater, and the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Castro jokingly proposed to Booker 'a Cardinal deal tonight that if you run for governor of New Jersey, I’ll run for governor of Texas,' referring to the university’s mascot. Castro told POLITICO he plans to run for the third and fourth terms he is allowed as mayor. 'If voters will have me, I’ll be there for a while,' Castro said. 'Texas is going to take a while to change.' A Democrat could be elected to statewide office in six to eight years, he estimated."
