From the Newark Star-Ledger, about the moderate-liberal Democratic mayor of Newark, N.J. at the Democratic National Convention: "'I'm about to get very controversial here,' Booker said, before slamming Republican presidential and vice presidential nominees Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for reaching out to women while 'retracting women's rights.' 'That's like saying you're not a bigot because you have a black friend,' he said. 'That's like saying I love Latinos because I eat at
Taco Bell.'"
The article continues about Mayor Booker's speech: "Booker laid into the Republican party platform for forbidding abortions even in cases of rape, incest or the health of the mother. 'I was a co-chair of the of the DNC platform committee when we affirmed a woman's right to choose,' he said. 'If Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan get elected we will see a retraction of women's rights.'"
More from Mayor Booker: "Booker hit Romney and Ryan for touting their relationships with their mothers during the GOP convention last week. 'When it comes to your actions, when it comes to your deeds, when it comes to what you do everyday, you are denigrating those people you say you love,' he said. 'Don't tell me about it. Be it,' he added."
Booker Rising response: Reasonable people can disagree on the abortion issue. Either side can spin their position as being for women's rights. It can't logically be claimed that just because someone is pro-life or opposes taxpayer-funded abortions (which I oppose even though I'm pro-choice, because it isn't government's proper role), that they are opposed to women's rights.
