Asserts Botswana's center-right president. From Mmegi Online (Botswana): "Khama went on to say that whereas non-mining revenue accounted for about
45 percent of the total fiscal revenues 10 years ago, in the most
recent fiscal year their share had increased to 58 percent."
The article continues: "The President further
said that another area [in addition to creating more private sector jobs] that is in need of much improvement is exports. We are still far too dependent upon diamonds which is why we are
vulnerable to global market instability and to the eventual depletion of
diamond deposits,' he said. He elaborated that the private sector may
be growing but the growth is not being driven by exports. 'While there are some export successes, firms in the manufacturing
and services sectors, are generally dependent upon the domestic market
and in many cases dependent upon government procurement,' he said."
