South Africa: Black Middle Class Is Growing

A black middle class scene in South Africa
From South Africa magazine: "Although nearly eight in 10 South Africans are black, whites earn six times more money, Census 2011 shows. According to the data released by Stats SA on Tuesday, black African-headed households were found to have an average annual income of R60,613 [US$7,023] in 2011, while white-headed households had the highest average household income at R365,134 [US$42,309] per annum. Incomes of black South African households however have surged 169.1 percent in a decade, with the statistics pointing to a growing black middle class. Overall, average household incomes now stand at R103,204 [US$11,960], up from R48,385 [US$5,608] in 2001."
