Alfred Doblin over at The Record (New Jersey) argues that the moderate-liberal Democrat shouldn't run for governor in 2013, but instead run for the U.S. Senate in 2014: "His triumphs are in the big things — for example,
bringing private monies into Newark for public education. But would-be
governors don't win hearts and minds for the big things. It's the small,
quality-of-life things that get mayors — even charismatic ones —
elected governor. I am not sure Booker has achieved enough of those kinds
of things. I don't think any mayor of Newark could in two or even three
terms. Newark is a tough city to fix, and it has not been fixed as of
yet."
Booker Rising response: If Cory Booker has presidential aspirations, then he should ignore Mr. Doblin's advice. By far, a governorship is historically the easiest path to the White House (President Obama is a rare exception). Mayor Booker should strike while the iron is hot. Polls show him virtually tied with Gov. Chris Christie in a match-up. Potential primary rivals are wary of entering the race. Mayor Booker has national name recognition. He is an excellent fundraiser, with crossover appeal. The Democratic Party will go all out to help his bid. Many conservatives are upset with Gov. Christie over Hurricane Sandy optics that he provided President Obama in the closing days of the presidential campaign, which will hurt his fundraising efforts.
Should Cory Booker Wait Until 2014 To Run For Higher Office?
