The venerable conservative organization has released a press statement: "'On behalf of the American Conservative Union, I urge South Carolina
Governor Nikki Haley to make history and appoint Representative Tim
Scott to the United States Senate. A strong conservative leader, Rep.
Scott has an ACU rating of 96 and was elected as one of two members
chosen by his colleagues to represent the 85 member Republican freshmen
class at the leadership table.'"
Booker Rising response: Rep. Scott is certainly qualified for the job. He's already a sitting Congressman. He is a former South Carolina state legislator, so he knows about the state's key issues. He is also the top Republican whom South Carolina voters want in the seat. Rep. Scott is much more qualified than Henry McMaster, who some sources claim that Gov. Haley will appoint to the seat. A moderate-conservative, Mr. McMaster is the state's former Attorney General and former state Republican Party chair. He's nothing but a political hack whom Gov. Haley may reward for backing her gubernatorial bid, but his Congressional inexperience means that he'll have a steep learning curve. Meanwhile, Rep. Scott can hit the ground running in the U.S. Senate.
