Ghana: Great Work Ahead For John Dramani Mahama

The African Executive, a pro-free market website based in Kenya, discusses Ghana's recent presidential election: "Africa congratulates [center-left] President elect John Dramani Mahama for winning the hearts of Ghanaians to become Ghana’s president. Ghana once more did not disappoint Africans who were waiting with baited breath to see how the country would navigate the transition following the death of John Atta Mills."

It continues its commentary: "The president ought to hit the ground running and allay the fears that Ghanaians will not benefit from the country’s oil production that began in 2010. He should also rebuild investor confidence in the country following the depreciation of the country’s Cedi by 13 % against the dollar on legal tussles grounds. He should also allow the Opposition’s Nana Akufo-Addo — who is challenging his loss — to exercise his democratic rights through a fair court process."

More: "When all is said and done, Africa is proud of Ghana and no individual or corporate Ghanaians should allow the country to slide into unnecessary tussles. The country’s economy expanded at the fastest pace in Africa last year at 14.4 percent and is projected by the IMF to grow 8.2 percent this year and 7.8 percent in 2013. These gains ought not to be jeopardized."
