The Rising Stars Of South African Centrism

The moderate-liberal Democratic Alliance recently held elections for three open deputy federal chairperson positions. Two of the three winners are bookeristas. From News24 (South Africa): "

Mmusi Maimane, 31, Johannesburg

Mr. Maimane is currently the DA's spokesperson and a city councilman in Johannesburg. Often touted as a future DA leader, Mr. Maimane placed first among the nine candidates vying for the three slots.

The Soweto-born politico is a business consultant and trainer, and also lectures at the GIBS Business Institute. He also works with non-profits who specialize in HIV/AIDS, youth development, and rural development issues. Mr. Maimane has a Master's degree in theology, and is working on another Master's degree in public administration.

Makashule Gana, 29, Johannesburg

A city councilman in Johannesburg, Mr. Gana came placed third in DA balloting. Since 2010, he has also served as the Democratic Alliance's Youth Leader. Born in the village of Lefara, Mr. Gana has a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Limpopo. He is working on a post-graduate diploma in management with Wits Business School.

"We are the future of the DA," Makashule Gana said after the winning candidates were announced. "We will work together to make sure South Africa is governed by responsible people."
