| Rep. Tim Scott |
John Avlon argues that the conservative Republican Congressman's appointment would be historic for South Carolina and the Republican Party, and constructive for the country: "In terms of policy, as a centrist
independent, I might prefer former attorney general Henry McMaster or
former governor Mark Sanford in the Senate, at least in terms of the way
they would vote. Scott has not tried to distinguish himself as a policy
leader in Congress and he has been relatively shy of the media
spotlight, especially compared to his fellow African-American Tea Party
Republican Allen West."
More from Mr. Avlon: "But
he would be an immediately valuable addition to the Senate and national
political debate — whether you agree with his political views or not. He
would help upend old stereotypes about the South and the Republican
Party in ways that cannot be separated from the sweep of history and
America’s attempt to always form a more perfect union. And that is
ultimately why I think Tim Scott would be the best pick for Jim DeMint’s
Senate seat."
