Today in 1891, the libertarian Republican anthropologist and author was born. In this clip, the late Ms. Hurston —whom moderate-liberal commentator John McWhorter once referred to as "black people's favorite black conservative" — is singing "Uncle Bud" from the American Masters film on her life.
