Asserts the moderate-conservative politico. From the London Evening Standard: "Mrs Grant, 51, the first woman of African descent to become a
Tory minister, grew up in a single-parent household on a tough
northern council estate — a world away from the gilded upbringing
of most of Britain’s judicial elite. Vivacious and confident, the justice minister with an equalities
brief is the image of a modern successful career woman. But she is
clear that the profession she joined, eventually setting up her own
legal firm specialising in domestic violence and family breakdown
cases, has to modernise. 'A balanced judiciary is one that better reflects the society it
serves. There is much to do,' she said."
More: "The dearth of women at the top of the judiciary is startling.
Out of 11 sitting Supreme Court judges, just one is a woman, Lady
Hale. All the Heads of Division — the Lord Chief Justice, the
Master of the Rolls, the President of the Family Division,
Chancellor of the High Court and President of the Queen’s Bench —
are men. Nine out of 10 Lord Justices of Appeal are male, as are 85 per
cent of High Court judges and 83 per cent of circuit judges,
according to latest available figures, from April last year. But
while this gender imbalance is stark, it is overshadowed by the
lack of senior judges from ethnic minorities. All the Supreme Court judges, all the Heads of Division, all the
Lord Justices of Appeal and 94 per cent of High Court judges are
white, according to the Ministry of Justice’s latest figures."
Equalities Minister Helen Grant ain't done just yet: "Having seen Britain’s corporate world transformed by a voluntary
target for 25 per cent of board members of FTSE 100 companies to be
women by 2015, Mrs Grant now wants the judiciary, chambers and law
firms to adopt a similar strategy. 'Fundamentally I think targets are very good in relation to the
development and promotion of women and people from a black and
minority ethnic background,' she explains."
