| Miss Israel Yityish Aynaw: Israel's latest diplomatic weapon to persuade President Obama to its side |
The article continues about next week's event: "The mass circulation Yedioth Ahronot newspaper reported that Ms Aynaw — who emigrated to Israel from Ethiopia with her Jewish grandparents after the death of her mother when she was 12 — would have the chance to exchange pleasantries with the president. She told the newspaper that Mr Obama's status as America's first black president had inspired her to make him the subject of her high school graduation essay. 'For me, he is a role model who broke down barriers, a source of inspiration that proves that every person really can reach any height, regardless of their religion, race or gender,' she said."
A Bookerista Responds
Y'all know that conservative blogger Sandra Rose couldn't resist making a dig: "President Obama will exercise his executive privilege to dine with a pretty young lady — whether Michelle Obama likes it or not....No doubt Mr. Obama is already smitten with the younger, softer version of his wife, Michelle. Expect a personal invite from Barack for Miss Aynaw to visit the White House soon."
UPDATE: Some more information on Ms. Aynaw: A former Israeli Defense Force officer, she was working as a clothing store sales assistant until she won the Miss Israel crown. Her parents died in Ethiopia, so she was raised by her grandparents. She cites Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as one of her heroes, and argues that Ethiopian Israelis can draw from his life example. She also believes that spy Jonathan Pollard should be released from prison.
